Get to know four local artists making their mark in Las Vegas.
JW Caldwell
Caldwell, an artist and preparator who covers downtown on bicycle, incorporates influences from his western upbringing and from hunting and fishing into his artwork. From paint-by-number style cowboys being bucked against a western background to post apocalyptic birds and skull portraits, his media includes paint, gunpowder, blood, coffee, wine, bullets to butterflies.
Aaron Sheppard
Sheppard, a recent UNLV MFA, creates raw, intense and emotional multimedia works using paint, wood, canvas, photos and found objects. Sexuality, individuality and gender identity are dominant themes in Sheppard's performances and paintings. His background in rock 'n roll, cross-dressing, the New York club scene and blue-collar work bleeds into his work.
Catherine Borg
Borg's video, audio, photography and sculpture often explores the way architecture structures memory. She's shown in Las Vegas, New York and New Jersey galleries. Two of her video works were recently screened at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She moved to Las Vegas in 2004 with husband, artist Stephen Hendee. Her work often features the transformation of Las Vegas.
Tim Bavington
Bavington's striped paintings represent song portions, created by combining the 12-tone musical scale with a 12-hue color palette. His work is in New York's Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection and the artist is represented by Mark Moore Gallery in Santa Monica and Jack Shainman Gallery in New York. He received his MFA from UNLV, where he studied with Dave Hickey.
