RTC approves contracts for two more ACE rapid bus lines

The Regional Transportation Commission on Thursday approved contracts to move forward with building two more lines of the new ACE rapid bus service.

The commission is set to begin service March 28 of the first two ACE lines — the ACExpress C Line, which will run from Centennial Hills to downtown Las Vegas, and the Gold Line, which will run down the Strip.

The ACE bus rapid transit system is designed to look more like light-rail trains than traditional buses, with designated routes, stations with boarding platforms and, in some places, designated bus-only lanes.

The two contracts approved Thursday were for the Green Line, which will run on Boulder Highway from downtown Las Vegas to Henderson, and a line on Sahara Avenue from the west to east side of the valley.

A $41.5 million contract for the Boulder Highway line is with Las Vegas Paving for the second phase of the project, including construction. That line is expected to be completed in the fall of 2011.

A $2.4 million contract with the Louis Berger Group is for planning and developing the Sahara bus line.

The $45 million Sahara line is largely funded by federal stimulus funds, which require the project to be completed by February 2012.
