Wynn Resorts again ranks highest among large hotel-casino operators in Fortune magazine's annual rankings of the most admired companies in each industry.
Fortune, in its March 22 issue, ranks Apple Inc. as the most admired company in the world.
Among hotel, casino and resort companies, Marriott International is ranked No. 1 followed by Wyndham Worldwide, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Wynn Resorts and MGM Mirage.
Listed as "contenders" in the category are No. 6 Accor followed by Penn National Gaming, Harrah's Entertainment, Las Vegas Sands and Boyd Gaming.
Fortune said Wynn, which also led casino resort operators in 2009, ranked second in the hotel, casino and resort category for innovation and No. 3 for people management, quality of management and quality of its products and services.
MGM Mirage, known for its diversity programs, was ranked No. 4 among hotels, casinos and resorts in the area of social responsibility. It also ranked fourth for global competitiveness.
Las Vegas Sands, for reasons that were not explained, ranked No. 1 on Fortune's overall list of least-admired companies in the area of social responsibility. It ranked 10th in that category among the 10 hotel, casino and resort operators ranked by Fortune.
Boyd Gaming, again for reasons not explained, ranked No. 1 on the overall list of least-admired companies in the area of quality of products and services. It ranked No. 10 in that category among hotel, casino and resort operators.
Because just 10 companies in the hotel, casino and resort sector were ranked, smaller companies by revenue were not included in the rankings.
The smaller operators not ranked include Las Vegas companies American Casino & Entertainment Properties, Ameristar Casinos, Cannery Casino Resorts, Herbst Gaming, Majestic Star, Pinnacle Entertainment, Riviera Holdings, Station Casinos and Tropicana Entertainment.
In Fortune's overall list of the world's 50 most admired corporations, of the hotel and casino companies only Marriott International is included at No. 48. Other big players in the Las Vegas economy on the Top 50 list are Southwest Airlines at No. 12 and Wells Fargo & Co. at No. 39.
Fortune, which calls its Most Admired list "the definitive report card on corporate reputations," said the lists includes data from the 10 largest companies by revenue in each U.S. industry; and the 15 largest in each international industry.
Fortune hired Hay Group to ask executives, directors and analysts to rate companies in each industry on nine criteria such as investment value and social responsibility.

No surprise there - Another award for Wynn!
HEY WHY NOT AMERISTAR........ THEY ARE NUMBER ONE IN MY BOOK ...... AND NO MY CAP LOCK IS NOT STUCK....FORTUNE'S JUST PIS-ED ME OFF.

I do not understand why Sands ranked so low...
Wynn definitely knows what he is doing when it comes to gaming and entertainment. Sands isn't that far behind. Probably a little biased writer for Fortune magazine.
This means nothing. Americans love lists and Fortune loves sales
Why is Sands ranked so low? Because Adelson is a right-wing nut case! LOL
All Adelson cares about is $$$$$$ and creating low-end, styrofoam walls for his casinos (touch the walls when your there next!, some you'll see cause their falling apart)
"guns4hire - Boyd properties cater to people without teeth-" HAHA, very true - awkward crowd in the Boyd joints
No surprises here, Wynn wrote the book on the modern hotel/casino fleece..
["I do not understand why Sands ranked so low"]...
It's lack of "contributionnnnn$$$ and comp$" to the publi$her($) in order to get tho$e raved review$.
....and I still have all my teeth (and they're real too) - it's nice that a handful of Boyd properties have bowling alleys that cater to me !!!!!
However Wynn is ranked LAST in 'most admired by his employees'... Ive worked for both Wynn and Sands and Ill take working for Sands any day of the week.
It is very unfortunate that the Vegas Casinos are not evenin the running for the 50 top most admired companies in the world. When are The Vegas Resort Corperations going to realize that what puts them on top and highly profitable is the frontline employee. There attitude is what counts and how they are treated is a major player in the overall experience of the vistor of their establishment. In a pervious article in the Las Vegas Sun Harrah's Entertainment revealed how they have battled through this recession .They used the example of the person who makes up a bed in the resort rooms. They are timed on how long it takes to make a bed up.
Saying that I am sure their is some sort of repremand for not accomplishing this task in their time frame.
I would love to see the CEO and CFO of Harrahs work under these specifications for a month and see how they fare.I would also love to see the upper managment work the casino floors as dealers and as floor people and see them work on the front desk al of this done undercover with no one knowing who they are.I believe they would exploded from the preasure and the treatment from their immediate supervisors.
If the corperate leaders had the concern of their company as they say they do.They would give it a whirl. It is truley sad to watch the every day employee work in tourture in todays world. A hard worker is no longer rewarded for their extra effort. It is just expected and taken for granted so what ends up happening the hard worker with the achievment above and beyond falls into the same old situation. They do not I do not care. Now the corperate management has created another attitude.
I was an over achiever until I realized that no one cares so I go in put in my hours meet the requirements and go home hoping to go in the next day and have my job.
I don't know the man and do work on the strip. He must be the guy with his name on the Casino. I don't know of any other casino's with someones name.
I believe Steve Wynn is what we need to pull us out of this spiral.
Steve is great- an innovator of gaming- that is why he chose to steal the dealers tips to pay his management and created the most hostile working environment in all of Las Vegas. go steve
An open letter to Forbes:
Dear Forbes,
You have been the victim of an unfair assesment. The outside view of Las Vegas has often shown to be reality-challenged. While it's true that the Wynn Resort IS the most admired, any local reporter would have quickly realized that it is Steve Wynn, who is doing all the admiring. In the same vein, you could argue the point that Mr. Wynn is the most admired person in Las Vegas.
At least until Ms. Dion returns.
Sincerely,
Vixen
By rodtig, I agree with you 100%. The casinos are the best at detroying motivation and incentive. What incentive is there to busting your butt to get ahead, only to be passed over by a friend of the boss, or a young attractive female with absolutley no personality or work experience?
I worked at Wynn....I agree with kenodave, irishfighter and seriously...Wynn is the least admired by his employees and I know this probably has to do with the dealer tip thing but I was not a dealer...when I left everybody I spoke with...at least 4 from different departments other than games said they would leave if they had another job.
Treat your people like dogs and they'll bite your customers. Unionize and protect workers rights and your business too.
I was on the hotel side at Wynn and would go back in a second! Loved my time there - with the exception of this forum, Ive heard horror stories about working at Venetian from friends in the biz...
