Wednesday, June 30, 2010 | 10:48 a.m.
The number of passengers traveling in and out of McCarran International Airport dropped 1.6 percent in May compared to the same month last year.
The airport said 3,476,021 people arrived at or departed from McCarran in May, compared to 3,532,182 people in May 2009.
Year to date, there have been 16,213,278 passengers traveling through McCarran, a 3.4 percent drop from the same period last year, which saw 16,787,151 passengers.
McCarran’s busiest carrier, Southwest Airlines, saw a 1.3 percent drop in May, when it carried 1.3 million passengers.
The second busiest carrier, Delta, saw an 11 percent increase in passengers, a result of the airline’s merger with Northwest.
U.S. Airways, once one of the top carriers at the airport, had a 56.2 percent decrease in traffic in May after dropping the number of flights it offers to Las Vegas.

I see drops of 1.3% Southwest, 11% Delta, 56.2% US Airways. The overall drop was only 1.6% May year over year. So what airlines carried more people?
If they passed Obama's job killing Climate or Energy bill then these numbers will continue to do go down.
It will drive up fuel prices and therefore ticket prices. Less peolpe will drive and fly to Vegas. More people will be laid-off in both private and public sectors.
What is Reid going to do to stop that?
As Reid will soon be unemployed, my guess is he will do nothing.
I think it's interesting how everyone wants to jump the Harry Reid band wagon and blame him for ills that plague the region. It couldn't possibly be because of the gross negligence and complete ineptitude of our now lame-duck (more lame than duck) governor. And, it certainly couldn't be because people who used to have discretionary income to spend now don't because companies in the heart-land (where most of our tourism is generated) are laying off or cutting hours or going out of business all together.
I seriously doubt that nut case, Sharron Angle will be able to do much more for you teabaggers.
boy, obama sure has things turned around, huh?
I fly Continental, and the price of a roundtrip is up $150 since last year. Expect traffic to continue declining.
Look on the bright side, Gulf Coast Casinos are going to send us business.
Opps, those are the same gaming companies that ran Nevada into the ground?
We should just learn from the experts and move to China, you know like Wynn and MRI and of course my favorite comrade Sheldon Ahole.
jkush654 has it right. Not having all the numbers to compare leaves you scratching your head. Southwest carries about 37% of the traffic. There must be some huge number drops from Alaskan, United etc.
I'm not sure if the story was changed after jkush654 made his posting at 11:14 a.m., but the story above now reads that Delta's traffic was up 11 percent, not down as his remarks suggests.
There's also a link to the paperwork the airport released today on the side of Kyle Hansen's story if you want to see the detailed numbers.
They also post those reports on the airport's Web site if anyone wants to look into the numbers in more detail than they see in the story. There are three dozen airlines at McCarran so you can't expect a short newspaper story to list everything.
nothing to do with the deep recession then?
stevem, Obama has done little. I agree.
But the fact is, the nation is so messed up, with many issues. It would take a LONG time for ANY president to fix things. If that's even possible. The government is so corrupt, how could one person affect too much change with everyone else in the senate, etc...
Also, don't blame it on Obama. He came into this mess already in progress. Blame your republican, Bush.
