Las Vegas to fire up to 108 degrees

Temperatures to cool off to near-normal by weekend

A late June heat wave will continue to bake the Las Vegas area today, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say that high pressure over the area will send sunny skies and 108-degree heat to Las Vegas again today, but temperatures will drop 5 degrees to near-normal for the weekend.

Low pressure off the west coast will also bring winds gusting up to 25 mph this afternoon, forecasters said.

The weather service also said some monsoon moisture will remain over northwest Arizona through Thursday, bringing that area a slight chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

At 5:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 80 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 76 degrees. The record low was 60 degrees, set in 1970, 1955 and 1938.

Around the valley just before 6 a.m., temperatures were 76 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 73 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 74 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures in the valley were to rise today to 95 degrees by 9 a.m., to 103 degrees by noon and reach a high of 108 degrees by 3 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 103 degrees and the record high was 115 degrees, set in 1994.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 107 degrees at 6 p.m., then drop to 100 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 93 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Thursday's morning low will be 85 degrees and Thursday's high will climb to 108 degrees, they said.
