LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Change rules of engagement or get out

It has been reported that a large majority of Afghans do not want to see a return of the Taliban. It has also been reported that many Afghans are reluctant to support and fight for the current corrupt government in Kabul.

Into this situation we have inserted our military with rules of engagement so strict that it endangers their safety, and we have set a date for exiting. As an American, I find this unacceptable.

We should never send our military to fight with rules of engagement that place them at a disadvantage or give the enemy a date for our exit. If a corrupt government in Kabul will not do as we ask, and the Afghans will accept our assistance only if it comes with one of our hands tied behind our back, helping them isn’t worth a single American life.

If the Taliban comes back, we will just have to deal with them at that time. Have we all forgotten that our soldiers are human beings who deserve a chance to live out their lives?
