A 37-year-old African refugee has been charged in connection with sexually assaulting three young relatives after his wife walked in on him allegedly assaulting a 10-year-old girl and reported it to police.
Kalunga Kanyela is charged with three counts of sexual assault, four counts of lewdness with a victim under 14 and one count of open and gross lewdness.
Metro Police arrested him June 12 after his wife asked a friend to report that her husband had been sexually assaulting the girl.
His wife told officers she walked into the living room of their house near Maryland Parkway and Twain Avenue on June 11 and saw her husband push the girl off him. She said she thought something inappropriate was going on because he allegedly molested the girl when they lived in Africa.
According to the arrest report, the girl told her mother that Kanyela had touched her genitals prior to her walking into the room. She also said Kanyela had forced her to have sex with him on another occasion.
Kanyela begged his wife not to tell anyone. He said he would never do it again, the report said. She then called a friend who contacted police.
Investigators said Kanyela denied touching the three girls at first, but then said he touched the 10-year-old on her stomach and chest. He told officers he didn't know it was wrong in the United States because it is allowed in Africa.
He said he would write a letter to the girls apologizing to them for what he did, but later said he couldn’t do it, the report said. He agreed to write a letter to the court to explain what he did, police said.
The girl was taken to Sunrise Hospital, where police officers and Swahili interpreters made contact with the family, who are refugees from the Congo region of Africa. They have lived in the U.S. since November 2009.
The girl told officers Kanyela forced her to have sex with him and that the abuse was common when they lived in Africa. She said it had occurred at least five times before, the report said.
Police also interviewed the other two alleged victims. A 15-year-old girl told police Kanyela had sexually assaulted her numerous times in Africa and that he had touched her breasts earlier in the day, then she pushed his hands away, police said.
Hospital officials also confirmed that a 6-year-old had been a victim of sexual abuse.
He is being held in the Clark County Detention Center. His bail was set at $75,000.

Refugee or not, a prime candidate for deportation.
We're being swarmed by creatures like this. Get used to it.
this week...
arizona = 2 (meth dealer and this guy)
liberals = 0
@logic, you are right. take a look at the guy from henderson: http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/jun...
dimface- Bad example. Been to a strip area Starbucks or taken a cab lately?
stevem: No, it's not a win for AZ. The AZ laws have nothing to do with this. Laws were already on the books. And for your information, liberals would be fine with his deportation, should he be given a fair trial and found guilty.
Refugee! HA! Probably illegal too. Let his home country deal with and pay for his incarceration!
The racism on these comment sections practically defies belief.
Where are all of these bigots when the white people commit crimes? Over emotional, knee jerk cowards.
The White people in Vegas always cover for their own - and always over-react when the accused in Brown or Black.
For comparison, check out the sympathetic comments posted on the article about the 28 year old child porn freak they busted yesterday: The efforts to make him out as "someone who needs help," "a target of big brother," etc are absolutely terrifying.
Honestly, I can't wait for Vegas' racism to make front page news nationwide and around the world. Then everyone will realize they are visiting a trailer park on a meth trip.
@ OG and ThisOneGuy
If you think it is racism to convict, and then deport this person, please invite him over to watch your kids if you are so concerned.
ummm...the AZ laws have EVERYTHING to do with this. letting people into this country unchecked is a mistake.
if that makes me a "racist"...i'll wear the scarlet "r" on my chest with pride.
It isn't racism to convict or deport this criminal. The nasty, hateful comments when the person is brown or black, calling other humans "creatures" because they speak a different language is bigotry at its worst. The lack of comments, or defensive comments with regards to white criminals (the bikers from a few weeks back is a great example), leave no doubt as to the true beliefs of many of the posters.
And Steve why do you think that this guy was here illegally? The article says he is a REFUGEE, that is a federally recognized class of immigrants. Now tell me what the AZ law has to do with this?
Hey This One Guy MORON. I'll make your life real simple. This guy should be killed, period. And the white guy from Boulder City, the teacher who molested the boys should die also. So how's that MORON Guy, no color, just justice. That's the way I feel about these people who prey on the helpless. No mercy. Now you can go protest something with your heros, Jesse Jackass and Al Sharpey.
ThisOneGuy -- welcome to the collective illusion that is the herd.
BCDave -- continue making it up as you go along just makes you irrelevant to any Discussion with reasonable people involved. That you 1) engage in such childish name-calling and 2) put this accused with the Henderson accused into the same category proves how completely thoughtless your posts are. You come off here like a kid willing to say anything to get noticed. I urge you to consider exploring your intellectual side before your next post.
"...how little does the common herd know of the nature of right and truth." - Socrates in Plato's "Euthyphro" (399 B.C.E.?)
Just like I said, we need to deport all these people back to where they came from!!!!!!!!!1
Racism? Anything you don't agree with, be sure and call it that. If I happen to oppose some of Obama's policies, I then can assume you would call me a racist? I then can assume if Clinton encouraged welfare recipients to find jobs and a person of color disagreed, then Clinton would be considered a racist? How about a hero to anyone that encourages rebuilding the moral fibre of America. This is really getting old hat. Please judge a person by their actions and not their race, religion etc. Hard to do for some that are brought up in all white, all black neighborhoods. I happen to be white and what this guy did is despicable. What the white teacher did in Boulder is despicable. Guess that makes me a racist? Whatever program allowing refugees to enter is country needs a better screening process when a person can use the defense, "I didn't know child sex was wrong in the U.S." Amazing what happens to the quality of life in America when others are allowed in and don't assimilate to our culture. This is one great example.
