Kitchen fire destroys apartment in Las Vegas

Apartment fire

A kitchen fire destroyed a Las Vegas apartment Friday morning, displacing two people.

Firefighters were called to the apartment at 4019 Edgeford Place, near Desert Inn Road and Valley View Boulevard, just before 10 a.m. after the residents of the apartment called for help.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and flames were visible, but firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

One of the residents of the apartment was cooking food while he was washing clothes, he told fire investigators.

He dropped a pile of clothes on the floor next to the stove so he could go to the bathroom, and when he returned, the clothes were on fire, officials said.

One of two adults who lived at the apartment received second-degree burns to the hands and face but refused medical treatment, Szymanski said.

The fire gutted the 850-square-foot apartment and destroyed all of its contents, but a damage estimate was not immediately available, officials said.

Investigators ruled the fire an accident.
