LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Force isn’t key to U.S. success in Afghanistan

Afghanistan is a disaster.

It seems obvious to me that the comments of Gen. Stanley McChrystal and his aides reflect the frustration they feel at failing so miserably and are an attempt to put the blame on the Obama administration. McChrystal violated the military code of honor and had to be dealt with by President Barack Obama, who accepted his resignation Wednesday.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that the descendants of the armies of Genghis Khan make up much of the Afghanistan population, including those in the Taliban, and no one in modern history has ever been able to conquer Afghanistan by force. It is time we understand that we can’t either.

Victory in Afghanistan will only result from nonviolent efforts.
