Ensign’s time is running out

Thursday, June 24, 2010 | 2:01 a.m.

If anyone still doubts that Sen. John Ensign is in deep, deep trouble, Wednesday’s Hill newspaper cleared that up. “In depositions to the Senate Ethics Committee, staffers for Sen. John Ensign have said the Nevada Republican and his senior aides knew a one-year lobbying ban was being broken when they helped a former staffer set up a short-lived career on K Street, according to two sources close to the investigation,” the story began. So let’s get this straight: Aides to the senator have told Senate investigators — and surely will tell Justice Department folks, too — that Ensign knew Doug Hampton was violating a lobbying ban when he helped set him up in business. Ensign, who has shamefully tried to blame Hampton for all his problems after sleeping with Hampton’s wife and then using his parents to try to buy Hampton’s silence, must realize his time is nearly up. If not, we are going to see quite the nationally televised spectacle before the Senate Ethics Committee — unless Ensign gets indicted first.
