LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Beautiful, fragile Gold Butte needs our protection

I have been enjoying the sensitive archaeological sites in Gold Butte for many years. I have come to appreciate the beautiful and mysterious rock art, the artistic sandstone, fragile wildflowers and the wide-open beauty of Gold Butte’s magical landscape.

I am distressed at the destruction caused by people who don’t know or don’t care about Gold Butte’s value. With each visit, I witness more destruction — shotgun blasts and graffiti on irreplaceable ancient rock art panels; trash heaps and human waste at sensitive archaeological sites; and off-road vehicles ripping new scars across fragile desert.

I am heartened that Nevada’s congressional delegation is working to address these challenges. Gold Butte is a treasure worth protecting.

Common ground is needed to educate the public to protect Gold Butte from the growing infringements, so that its beauty may be enjoyed by all and protected for our children in the future.
