Expedia to hire 130 workers at Las Vegas office
Friday, June 18, 2010 | 2:42 p.m.
Travel company Expedia announced today it will add 130 new jobs to the online travel company’s Las Vegas operations by the end of the month.
Las Vegas is home to operational functions serving a number of the company’s travel brands, including Expedia.com and Hotels.com. The company will host an open house later this month.
The new jobs, mostly travel agents and support staff, will serve Egencia operations, the corporate travel arm of Expedia that services corporate travel accounts for global companies. Other operations at the Las Vegas office will include telesales, customer support and additional functions.
“Expedia has long been a partner of the Las Vegas travel and tourism industry, and we are pleased to be able to add jobs in this community,” said Michael Reichartz, Las Vegas-based vice president of market management for Expedia, in a prepared statement. “This expansion means new jobs for 130 Nevadans and we are hopeful for further growth, which is always something to celebrate.”
Expedia’s Las Vegas office is at 10190 Covington Cross Drive in Summerlin.

Great news on a day that NV got some really bad news. I used to work at Expedia, and honestly, it was the best job I've ever had.
Wow!! Harry Reid must have made one of his "famous" phone calls.
Let's hope they hire candidates from LV and not from other parts of the country!
I worked at Expedia. Low pay, higher cost for benefits, chained to your desk work. You will be responsible for hotels, airline and car reservations. $12 an hour minus what you pay out for benefits. Hours starting out are terrible..many people quit because the schedule conflict..I wouldnt call this growth because out of the 130 that start..there may be about 20% left after the weed out people. Also they expect you to sell with no commission but sales is a large part of your performance there..training is a month, 8 hours a day. Sams customers and AARP are the two biggest accounts.
During this high unemployment period, laid off workers can not afford to be choosy. We complain when companies send these jobs overseas and we complain when they offer them to us. I guess some people are not happy if they don't have anything to gripe about.
LV8;
Schedule conflict? With what? Your CEO position with another company? Sleep pattern? People, be happy to employed and not a drain on the public assistance with the other 14 percent.
Good to see someone leaving their call center in the US, instead of sending it to India.
LV's comment is why unemployment should not continue forever. The starting wage he mentions is about equal in terms of take home pay as our current unemployment benefit.
So look for a better job, go to school, and use the job you have now as a way to pay some of your bills...Hello?!
And about a quarter of a mile down the road from the Expedia offices, slightly more than 100 high paying jobs at USA Repository Services are being eliminated, so there will be a large net loss to Las Vegas and Clark County in terms of income, again thanks to your "friend" Harry.

Could not agree more! It's incredibly hard to find work right now so if you can, don't sneeze at it just because it's lower in pay than what you want or expect! Something is better than nothing. I couldn't find steady work for nearly 2 years and when I got my current position it's about $3 less than I am used to getting (for similar work) and though I am constantly broke, at least my bills are paid and my family can eat. On a similar note: did anyone see the article about how some companies are putting in their ads "unemployed people need not apply" or "only looking for people who are currently working"? That's crazy! According to what I read, as soon as the media talks to the companies that have this disclaimer in their ads and ask about this practice, the companies take that wording out. Don't employers realize that the majority of unemployed people are not working through no fault of their own? I guess they don't read the papers. It's not illegal, but it doesn't make it right, in my opinion.
HEY, ARE THEY PLANNING ON USING
E-VERIFY
to be certain they're NOT hiring ILLEGAL ALIENS...?
I'm happy that there's companies like Expedia, Zappos, Vegas.com and many others that provide excellent work environments to call center employees. You can make a fair wage and still have time to do other talents or make more money. Good to hear they can hire.
Why are all the tighty rightys complaining about Harry Reid not creating more jobs in Nevada? Isn't that what we pay our "governor" to do? Just what has our luvgov been getting paid for, for the past 3-1/2 years. Gibbons thinks he's getting paid for chasing women not his wife and harassing the rest for not agreeing to his come-on lines. Are you people nuts? Jobs in Nevada are not Harry Reid's job. It's the job of our useless governor. Get a clue!
To be clear, I wasn't a call center agent. I worked as a software engineer at the Expedia office in WA (I was in Vegas for a short period). Sounds like LV89119 might have a better idea on the available positions here.
That said, I did work with the call center agents, and I would say that most of them had the same mentality when I was there. A lot of bitching and moaning because other people made more than them. Of course, they didn't take into consideration the fact that most of us that were on salary weren't clocking in/out, working 8 hours a day, and most of us had at least a bachelor's degree in our field (many had advanced degrees from very prestigious schools - not me). We were always on call, consistently working 12 hour days, and I'd say most (if not all) the people in my department/position loved their job. The harder we worked and the more we contributed, the more we got paid and the more stock options/warrants we got, which is how it should be.
I guess the company was great for the people that want to work hard, but the people that just want to do enough to not get fired won't get the raises and benefits that they're used to working in the casino industry.
My opinion after working in both industries.
I just read my last post and it sounded really arrogant.
A better way to say it is that I think it's a great place to work for ambitious people. It might not be perfect for others that just need a job and a paycheck to support their family, but don't have the flexibility to work long hours and don't want to focus too much about the performance of the company.
oldnuke,
is there a link/news? didn't see it
LV8:
conflict with what scheduel, cashing your welfare check of your baby mama? chained to your desk? news flash, when you work customer service yes, you are required to sit at a desk, that is where the headset is to speak to paying customers.
Now, I thnk its cool and everything that Expedia is going to add another 130 or so jobs to the Las Vegas Valley, BUT are they one of those companies that will only hire you if you currently have a job. The reason I say that is because that seems to be the new trend with many companies. Yahoo.com had an article about this the other day. I guess we'll see
It is nice to read what others write saying some positive things rather than bitching and putting others down. I was especially impressed by someone saying the company was a good place to work as just by its name and brief information I assumed it was a two-bit telephone soliciting job. Those prior prejudices can cause me to be very wrong about somethings. I guess it would help if more people realized that at least some times any job is better than no job and sometimes a bad job can lead to another better job. This is especially true when someone has been unemployed for a long time as it shows that at least the guy has what it takes to get to work and do what is necessary to remain employed.
Good for the workers but personally I wouldn't give you 2 cents for Expedia or their practices.Burnt too many times by them. But no more
Do you hav to spk englis?
I agree with some of the things LV89119 stated about expedia. They have a high turnover and whats worse then that is that a lot of employees are through temporary agencies that have not been hired on and have no job security whatsoever. The training sucks but promotes committing fraud through delayed billing and not paying hotels in a timely manner, prolonging the process and monies due to hotels. The company is home to a lot of overweight people that look forward to break time and Friday meetings, wondering who got stabbed in the back yet again.
Hey guys,
has anyone already tried AZ, ...I do not know whether it's too far, since I am not a local guy:

One of the reasons unemployment is at 14% in Nevada, is because the current unemployment benefits system is too easy. Instead of giving out debit cards that are easily re-loaded over the internet, make them go to one office and stand in line for a check only after providing verification that they have filled out 5 applications every week!! That is 1 per day which shouldn't be too hard considering you have lots of free time!! After waiting in line for hours every single week, maybe it will motivate people to quickly find work and get on with their lives.
Amen to denver21. All the free rides need to STOP.
Not just unemployment, but Section 8, HEAP, food stamps, welfare, and let's not forget the truly laughable "disability" system. I'd say it is a safe bet that at least 95% of Americans will have NOTHING to live on WHEN the government goes broke.
Perhaps the whole company isn't bad.. I was just simply commenting about those particular travel assistant jobs at the call center. I don't care what economic times we are in, $12/hour minus benfits with no commission when you are expected to sell is terrible. Positions like these are not what I would call "economic growth" for the community. The reason why there were scheduling conflicts is because people started their positions without knowledge of what their schedule was. The schedules were not released until 2 weeks after you started. As I stated before, they will probably only keep at most 20% of 130 hired within the first 90 days. I personally witnessed people receive a customer service award one week, then out the door the next. A few of the supervisors were nice but that couldn't overcome the low pay and low morale in that office.
Good news for those really out looking for jobs! Those of you who are complaining aren't out looking for jobs anyway. As long as unemployment is available to you you will keep complaining as your excuse to not getting a job. Wait til it ends and you really have to look for a job, bet your tune will change!
I will say this much, if the pay is $12 an hour it is better than most casino job pay rates. I worked inside sales/telemarketing, you are tied to the phone/desk (guess what that is the job), had no stress, easy to do, nice people on the phone for the most part. Occasional rude people, goes with any customer service and/or sales job. Management/supervisors are an issue whatever job you do, name one besides Zappos where management and morale are not a factor.
Good luck to everyone out there looking in finding that job/career! Someday we will be able to find the perfect career, right now we just need a job!
