The UNLV football program announced Wednesday that it has hired a new linebackers coach.

Brent Guy, who spent last season as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Louisville, will replace Ty Gregorak, who came with first-year head coach Bobby Hauck from Montana but resigned earlier this month following an incident outside of a downtown club in Boulder, Colo.

Guy already is somewhat familiar with UNLV, having faced the Rebels three times during his four-year run as the head coach at Utah State from 2005-08.

Guy's résumé also includes stints as a defensive coordinator at Arizona State (2001-04) and Boise State (1998-2000), plus time as a linebackers coach at Oklahoma State (1989-91, 95-97) and Utah State (1992-94).

"Brent Guy brings a tremendous amount of experience on the defensive side of the ball, particularly at the linebacker position," Hauck said in a statement. "He is also a natural fit to recruit the Dallas area. We are excited for Brent to join us and expect him to make a smooth transition to our staff even though we are late in the football calendar."

Guy left Louisville along with the rest of the Cardinals staff after head coach Steve Kragthorpe was replaced by former Florida assistant Charlie Strong. However, the Cardinals did rank 65th in the Football Bowl Subdivision ranks last season under Guy in total defense. UNLV was 115th out of 120 teams in 2009 in that category.

Guy began his playing career at Oklahoma State as a walk-on and became a starter at both defensive end and linebacker, graduating in 1983.
