Game review: “Super Mario Galaxy 2”

SMG2

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is unlike anything you’ve ever seen … except for Super Mario Galaxy—it’s very similar to that. Just an observation, not a critique. After all, SMG was a fantastic game, and there’s nothing wrong with a double dose of fantasticality.

You already know the SMG2 plot: Bowser kidnapped the Princess, and Mario’s got to save her. What you don’t know about are the new abilities Mario’s developed to help him in his quest. Mario can now morph into rolling stones, fart clouds and run up walls.

The main problem with SMG2 is all the talking. It rolls onto the screen slowly, and I can’t skip through it. Every time I want to play as Luigi, I have to sit though “Hey, Bro! You’re looking for a star around here, huh? You want me to take over for a little while? You want to switch, Bro?” And then I have to click yes, and then Luigi cheers, and then the screen goes to black, and then I can play as Luigi. Argh.

Luigi is a better jumper than Mario, but less agile. So why is it that Luigi only hangs out in those galaxies in which jumping is less important than agility? That’s like Starbucks giving out free cups of coffee, but only when it’s 115 degrees out.

Three and a half stars

In most games, when you lose all your lives, you hear “Press A to continue!” or “Get back in there, champ!” But when Mario loses all his lives in SMG2, a purple star wearing checkered pants tells him, “Maybe you should just take a break for a little while, captain.”

Take a break? Did the star just promise Michelle Obama to help her in the fight against childhood obesity? Well, I got bad news for Mrs. O.: Now that SMG2 is out, your fight just got a lot harder.
