LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Don’t misrepresent health care reform

I wonder if people even try to understand the health care reform laws that were recently passed. I see nothing in that legislation that indicates a takeover of health care by the government. So it does not fall under the heading of “government-run health care.”

America does have government-run health care in the form of military health care for our men and women in uniform. There is government-run health care for our veterans who served in the military. There is government-run health care for our poor. Medicare is also government-run health care, which provides for those 65 and older. Members of Congress also have the option of government-subsidized health care, as does the president. Most opt for it.

So things will not change much under the new laws except that the “free market” will not be able to exclude people from having health insurance. It also requires everyone to have health insurance or face a penalty. I agree with this, as my medical insurance premiums reflect costs of medical care for those who receive care but can’t pay for it.

Medical care will still be a free-market type of care, administered by insurance companies, with the personal option of getting a second opinion.
