LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Lowden’s defeat, Angle’s victory, put in perspective

The primary election system worked in the case of Sue Lowden, who lost her bid to be the Republicans’ U.S. Senate nominee from Nevada. She was just being herself and gave us a clear look at what we would have had to look forward to had she been elected.

The irony is that Nevada Republicans elected a real extremist in Sharron Angle, whose views are untenable, but I am confident that Nevadans will see the folly of this act and re-elect Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Across the country we saw a number of incompetent losers elected in primaries, none more astounding than Carly Fiorina, the failed CEO of Hewlett-Packard who won the Republican U.S. Senate primary in California. I call it the Sarah Palin effect, this desire to embrace mediocrity.

I pray that God will save us from ourselves.
