Census Bureau: Clark County gained 23,741 in 12 months

Clark County has continued to grow despite a tough economy and an unemployment rate that's among the nation's highest, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released today.

The Census Bureau estimates the county gained 23,741 residents between July 1, 2008, and July 1, 2009, bringing Clark County's population to 1,902,834. The county accounted for 87 percent of Nevada's growth over the 12-month period, the Census Bureau said.

The population estimate for Nevada on July 1, 2009, was 2,643,085, according to the numbers released today.

Washoe County is estimated to have gained 2,601 residents, bringing its population to 414,820.

The least populous county in Nevada, Esmeralda, lost 38 people, dropping its population to 626, the Census Bureau said.

The estimates are based on 2000 Census data and updated by using records to estimate population change — mainly births, deaths, and domestic and international migration. The new estimates are not 2010 Census population counts.
