7-year-old boy apparently drowns in backyard pool during party

Drowning

A 7-year-old boy apparently drowned Saturday night in a backyard swimming pool during a party at a house in North Las Vegas, police said.

About 20 people were in the yard and pool area when someone noticed the boy, who had last been seen on a floating chair, at the bottom of the pool, police Sgt. Tim Bedwell said.

A man at the party and the boy’s father jumped in the pool, dragged the child out and started administering CPR, Bedwell said. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will determine the cause of death and release the child's name.

The incident happened about 7:45 p.m. at a home in the 3100 block of Caribbean Blue Avenue, where a group of 30 to 50 people who worked together and their families were having a party, Bedwell said.

The death appears to have been accidental, he said. It would be the first drowning of the year in North Las Vegas.
