LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Rangel’s ethics problems tainting Democratic Party

Saturday, July 31, 2010 | 2:02 a.m.

Can Rep. Charles Rangel strike a deal with the U.S. House over his ethics violations? The real question is whether the House Ethics subcommittee, a bipartisan panel, will let the distinguished New York congressman cut a deal.

Incumbent Democrats are in the political fight of their lives this November. Democrats have been in charge of both houses of Congress for four years. The last thing Democrats want is news coverage 24 hours a day, starting in September, airing Rangel’s ethics violations.

With the August congressional recess looming, Democrats campaigning for re-election want this matter behind them. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her like-minded Democrats couldn’t get Rangel to resign. Is it time for President Barack Obama to weigh in? Can he get a deal for Rangel?

The flies in the ointment: Rangel is a sure win for the Democratic nomination in September for the congressional seat he’s held for 40 years. No other Democrat is close. Rangel defeated Adam Clayton Powell in 1970 for this seat and he’s held it since. Powell went down himself mired in House ethics violations.

One of the candidates in the race is Powell’s son, who will be the likely winner if Rangel decides, or is forced, to drop out of the race. Rangel, a decorated Korean War veteran who is loved and respected by constituents, is in the fight of his life, too. He won’t go without a battle. He may win the battle but Democrats will lose the war.
