When Walt Rulffes, the head of Clark County’s public schools, announced that he planned to leave, he wanted to give the school district plenty of time to find a successor.

That was five months ago and the search for a successor continues. Rulffes had wanted to be gone by Aug. 13, in two weeks.

But this morning, Rulffes, the Clark County school superintendent for the last five years, publicly proposed staying in the job at least until Jan. 4, 2011. He also proposed taking a cut in pay in the meantime, with a provision for a 30-day termination clause.

The Clark County School Board will take up the proposal at its work session next Wednesday.

In documents released on the district website, Rulffes proposes taking a 20 percent cut in pay in his $276,000 salary.

This would be on top of his 10 percent voluntary cut in base pay last year from $307,000. Ruffles also gives the trustees a choice: hire someone else as interim superintendent.

Last month, Jim Rogers, a businessman and past chancellor of the university system, offered to do the job for free until July 2013.
