Roger Mayweather talks to reporters at the Mayweather Boxing Club Tuesday, September 2, 2009.

The trial of Roger Mayweather, uncle of boxer Floyd Mayweather, was set to begin on Oct. 25 by the Eighth District Court Thursday.

Mayweather, 48, is charged with three felonies, including coersion and battery, for allegedly beating and choking a female boxer in August 2009 at her apartment on Rock Springs Drive near the corner of Rainbow Boulevard and Washington Ave.

He plead not guilty to the charges in late January.

Deanne Adams, state's attorney, said the prosecution would call eight to 10 witnesses to the stand. Jack Buchanan, Mayweather's attorney, said the defense would present one, possibly two, witnesses in its case.

Mayweather, who had previously missed two court dates, attended the hearing Thursday morning and stood silently before District Judge Valerie Adair.
