Henderson police target speedy drivers
Monday, July 26, 2010 | 3:24 p.m.
Henderson drivers may want to tap their brakes a little as the Henderson Police Department launches a two-week traffic enforcement operation targeting speedy drivers.
Henderson police officers, along with Boulder City Police, Mesquite Police and Nevada Highway Patrol troopers, will use saturation patrols on several streets known for high speeds and areas that have received the most citizen complaints, according to a press release.
Officials said a grant from the Department of Public Safety is funding the joint operation.
Speeding caused about 30 percent of all fatal car accidents in the United States, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

East Bound 215 at Valle Verde had cops on the bridge Radar and Tagging speeders while dozens of cops were waiting to pull people over, this morning (8:30am when I saw).
Good for them. Hopefully they catch all the unregistered, uninsured, and heck, even a bonus, illegal folks around town.
Sevenhills,
this story has nothing to do with illegals so there was no need to bring up the topic :) Anyways, the intersection of Jefferys Street and Horizon Ridge Parkway has been known to be a hangout for the Henderson PD. The speed limit on Jefferys southbound and northbound is 25mph and not 45mph as many would assume.
Henderson Police Open Target practice on Drivers.
Seems they are looking to match Metro's kill rate.

Speeders caused 30% fatal crashes.,The other 70% were from "DRUNKEN" illegals without drivers licenses. They were to young or too stupid to have "new" forged ones. The people that speed should acctually get up 15 minutes earlier every morning. The rest should learn to read the speed signs!!!!! IN ENGLISH !!!!!!
Henderson tickets speeders sometimes on the last few miles of Eastern, south from around Vons to the end of Eastern at Sun City. The speed limit is only 35, dropping suddenly from 45 south of that stretch. I annoy people by observing the speed limit, and doing it in the left lane when south bound, but I have to turn left in the middle of that stretch, and I can't move into the left lane safely at the last minute. Sorry. I don't want a speeding ticket. That speed limit is unnecessarily low, not for safety reasons, I bet, but to please the people in the giant 7-hills houses just west of there who want noise control. Further, the issue of illegal immigrants is not at all beside the point of traffic law enforcement. Nevadans are now considering whether they can continue to live without an immigration enforcement law such as Arizona has. That law requires Arizona law enforcement officers to help enforce federal law when encountering people for any law enforcement purpose, such as traffic law, but without racial profiling.
"The speed limit is only 35, dropping suddenly from 45"... so you think there should be signs counting all the way down to 35? 44mph, 43mph, 42mph...
I say racial profile and send the law breaking illegals back home to their ghetto country...To bad to the law breaking illegals...Apply for legal entry to MY country, then I will respect you when you come over here...Goodbye and addios muchachos...God Bless America...
The Henderson PD enforcement action is less about enforcement and safety and more about filling the revenue shorfall the city has. Every speeding ticket will cost $165.00 and the judge will make any deal, set up any payment program so as to not arrest you. Here's a tip plead not guilty, everyone who did this received a lessor fine than I did. Please remember the Henderson PD enforcement action the next time city wants a police bond passed, give them the middle finger salute and vote no!!!!!
Another 'fundraiser'. I got caught in one of their BS scams the cop actually told me go to court and they'll reduce it to a parking ticket. Apparantly didn't come to a 'complete stop.' Had another one recently says I was going 57 in 35. Absolute lie, didn't happen.
Cut your budget like the rest of us. It's a joke. Did something change about the way people drive here? No. They need cash, simple as that.
@ mar100
You're one of the few that are AWAKE, brother. Thank God.
This tactic was prevelant on Easter weekend and the weekend of the biker rally in Laughlin. On 95 NB by the mall exit, I counted 9 people pulled over by 9 different police vehicles. What I object to is that personnel from Boulder City and Mesquite take part in it. None of the revenue goes to Boulder City or Mesquite. In this case, it would be split between the state and Henderson. Another common thing now is setting up on the overpasses. Horizon Ridge over 95 and Wagonwheel overpass are always used. If I lived in Mesquite, I would be bitchin' loudly.

psssst --- it's not YOUR country it's OUR country.
While I appreciate your overreaching to violate the constitution regarding profiling it's not your place to do so. It's your place to sit there and shut up and live by the laws of the land. I know, tough medicine --- but who are you to come off the hater saying you own this dump of a country. And why is it a dump? because of close minded folks such as yourself.
now sit down -- shut up --- and keep YOUR ignorance within the confines of YOUR own house.
thank you.
vegas_tom, you over-react to clan5248 referring to the USA as "MY country." No doubt you have heard the patriotic song "America" which begins "My country, 'tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing;" Do you really mean to object to the hundreds of millions of Americans who have sung that song? You accuse the other person of being closed minded yet direct that person to keep silent. Whose mind is closed?
Why "saturation" patrols? Aren't the police supposed to pull over reckless, tailgating, speeding creeps at all times?
mesquite and boulder city police???? what is their kick back for all the tickets they write? Why are the reporters so bad? This is the most obvious question. This is not for safer streets, its about one thing.... MONEY. This is just another tax.
A ridiculous waste. Henderson Police also frequently target Anthem residents, largely a law-abiding, pro-police group. It is a waste of time and resources to have highly-paid officers sitting around in Anthem waiting for someone to go 52 in the 45 on Anthem Parkway.
Another silly cluster is a gang of NHP motorcycles in the morning on northbound 15 between St. Rose Parkway and Blue Diamond Road, where the speed limit is a silly 65. These are law-abiding people going to work in the morning. I drive it every day; there is no safety issue. As another poster said, it is purely a money grab. The nonsense about "safety" is just that -- nonsense to justify these ridiculous tactics. If police have the time to waste on this petty nonsense, maybe we should lay off some officers; obviously we have too many.
Driving in this town is like running a gauntlet- if your not doing 10 over, some impatient fool is riding your rear so they can do their usual 20 over- got here in the early 70's. Sure has changed- character-doing the right thing when no-one is looking-
Speeding doesn't cause accidents; poor drivers cause accidents. Speed enforcement is easier than any other type of enforcement, and that's why it is targeted. Period.
Tap their "BREAKS"... omg give me a BRAKE.... LOL.. Doesn't the Sun hire proof-readers anymore?
If you just pay attention and drive the limit you won't have a problem.
Nobody should ever complain about ticketing over speeders because it's like shooting two birds with one bullet; punishing traffic violators and helping replenish much needed govt revenues. If you don't want to get fined, follow the rules and it's not that complicated to understand.
I do 10-15 miles over the speed limit on the highways just to keep with traffic, and 5-10 on streets with no traffic. I've never been pulled over for a speeding ticket.
These clowns who get nailed are doing 20+ i'm sure.

"[The law] has placed the collective force in the service of those who wish to traffic, without risk, and without scruple, in the persons, the liberty, and the property of others; it has converted plunder into a right, that it may protect it, and lawful defense into a crime, that it may punish it." -- Frederic Bastiat, 1850 "The Law"
Regardless of speed posting guidance, the SAFEST speed is ALWAYS the speed of the traffic.

Its the end of the Mo. they need to make payroll.
Are most people on here complete morons or what? When a department issues a citation, the money does not go back to their department. Cops are paid to write tickets to teach drivers to drive safe. That is why we have traffic laws, and in case you have not noticed, driving around in this valley is as dangerous as it gets. There are a lot of idiots out there that should not even have a drivers license! Good for Henderson PD !! Keep it up.
sevenhills, beware, the 15 mph cushion has been reduced (at least in my state/county). I just finished court/traffic school for a 12 over and the cop lied in court after I started questioning them about inaccuracies in their description. Seemed to forget that I was turning into the parking lot they were sitting in and there's no way I could have made a turn going 52mph. (cop didn't remember me turning into the parking lot, said they "went after me" after I went by. The judge at least reduced the cost from $265 to $100. It's all about revenue. At least the cop had to show up and the court time probably cost the state more than the $100 they got from me. I'm generally pro police, but there are plenty of people violating the speed limit by 20+ or talking on phones (illegal in CA), following too close, Illegal lane changes, rolling stops, etc. It seems easier to go after decent people on their way to work, because they can pay. There was one guy in traffic school who was ticketed for going 69 in a 65. He paid almost $300 for that. Go get the speeders going 20 over or otherwise driving dangerously. Unfortunately revenue is what it's all about. The red light cameras here will set a person back over $500. They seem to be installing more all the time. Just gotta always brake hard at the yellow you might otherwise go through and hope the guy behind you does the same.
I'm all for the cops, but really? They need to lower the fines for lesser offenses (below 15 over) and increase the fines for the real violators out there. Make it worth their while to wait the extra 30 seconds for a more lucrative ticket to come along.
Anybody caught with a Nevada drivers license' And at the same time has an out of state tag on there car or truck should have there ass beat on the spot.
EVERYONE should ALWAYS challenge their traffic citations in court -- citations which don't result in conviction should automatically result in the innocent having ALL their costs reimbursed by the State.

Are you aware those tasked with enforcing traffic safety laws are the law's most prevalent violators?

The article is unclear, Are Mesquite and B.C. Police working in Henderson? That's a long way from Mesquite.
Harley, I agree, If everyone challenged their ticket in court, the courts would be so clogged up that it would take a long time to get heard. It would cause the officers to end up spending half of their time in court, or for the drivers to have a better chance that the officer wouldn't show and get it dismissed. I would expect that many lesser "offenses" would be dismissed to clear the court time.
At least around here, the judge substantially reduces the fine if you go to court. It's well worth taking the time to go to court. Just be sure you're polite and respectful, even if you disagree. The day I was there, those who were hot headed got little or no reduction in fines. Those who were polite, even in their arguement got a more than 50% reduction. Saved me $165.
"EVERYONE should ALWAYS challenge their traffic citations in court"
Harley -- if the courts were really courts there could be hope. Most traffic violations go to municipal courts, which are really only corporate courts.
Here's a shock -- I assume most speeding violations involve some kind of SMD (radar or lidar). SMD results can not meet the standards of common rules of evidence, i.e. hearsay! Yet try to bring that up in traffic court -- the "judges" won't allow it. That's how significant a source of revenue this is for the municipalities and state.
