Each year, the 48 Hour Film Project assigns teams of local filmmakers a genre, a line, a character and a prop and sets them loose to create completed short films in just two madcap days. Last year, the winning local film, Garage Sale, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival, and filmmakers put every ounce of talent and effort they have into producing professional, entertaining movies in a ridiculously short amount of time.

You have until Friday afternoon to sign up to participate in the event yourself (or you could just show up at the event kick-off and see if anyone needs a production assistant or background extra). And if you're curious to see what local creative types can come up with under extreme pressure, check out the public screenings of the contest's results, which typically range from unexpected genius to obvious desperation — both of which can be entertaining in their own way.
