The senator was clearly incensed about illegal immigration when he took to the floor, bemoaning “a decade of wretched excess and, true to form, immigration was taken to excess as well.”
The solution: “Paring back immigration to more manageable levels would necessitate some long-overdue changes in the way immigrants are selected,” the senator argued as he introduced a bill to deny citizenship to children of illegal immigrants and drastically reduce legal immigration. “The ever-growing pressure to expand immigration levels is a byproduct of a system that grants immigration preferences to extended family members.”
So which Republican made these comments, which would outrage many Democrats, on the Senate floor? No Republican at all. In fact, those comments were made by a Democrat by the name of Harry Reid.
I now pause for jaws to drop on both sides of the political spectrum.
But what is even more astonishing about these comments is they were made on Aug. 4, 1993, less than a year into his second term, long before Reid became the Senate Democratic leader. This story has a remarkable twist, too — I’ll get to it — that proves to me the enduring unpredictability of Nevada politics and how even, after nearly a quarter-century of covering this protean world, I am still surprised by what I discover.
I had not recalled this Reid speech but was reminded of it this week by none other than Tom Tancredo, the former Colorado Republican congressman and anti-illegal immigration zealot. Writing in the conservative publication Human Events, under the headline, “Bring Back the Old Harry Reid,” Tancredo longed for the halcyon days of 1993 when Reid wanted to be as punitive as he does.
Tancredo wrote almost rapturously of Reid’s Immigration Stabilization Act, recalling it would have “ended birthright citizenship to the children of illegal aliens, increased border security, created new sanctions against illegal aliens and their employers, and barred illegal aliens from receiving government benefits.”
Now, Tancredo lamented, Reid supports “amnesty,” a word that has lost all meaning in the hot-button debate over illegal immigration sure to occur again if Reid, as he recently said on “Face to Face,” can corral a couple of Republicans to vote for his current version of comprehensive immigration reform.
I am sure Tancredo — and many others — will believe that Reid’s change of heart has been occasioned by his rise to the Democratic leadership and the dramatic increase since 1993 in Nevada’s Hispanic population. But one speech Tancredo surely is not aware of — nor was I until I came across it — was Reid’s startling repudiation of his 1993 bill four years ago. Some excerpts:
“I wish to switch a little bit here and talk about something that is extremely personal to me. I have been a legislator for a long time …I don’t want this to be true confessions, but I want to relate to the Senate that the biggest mistake I ever made, the largest error I ever made was 15 or 18 years ago …A group of people came and talked to us and convinced us that the thing to do would be to close the borders between Mexico and the United States; in effect, stop people from coming across our borders to the United States. This period of time for which I am so apologetic — to my family, mostly — lasted about a week or two. I introduced legislation. My little wife is 5 feet tall. We have been together for soon to be 50 years. As I said here on the floor a few days ago, her father was born in Russia. He was run out of Russia. His name was Goldfarb, his family. They were Jewish. My wife heard that I had done this. She does not interfere with my legislation. Only when I ask her does she get involved in what I am doing. I didn’t ask her about this. She, in effect, said: I can’t believe that you have done it. But I had done it.”
Reid then talked about how, shortly thereafter, he was assailed at a town-hall meeting on his bill by Hispanic friends, and added, “I have done everything since that meeting in Las Vegas, in conversation with my wife, to undo my embarrassment.”
Some will say Reid was against amnesty before he was for it. Others will discount any notion Reid’s 2006 explanation was sincere. And still others will wonder how Reid could have been so easily persuaded in 1993 to introduce a measure he would bitterly oppose today.
I hope the majority leader can get a bill to the floor this year — if only to hear just what his remarks might be now.

The LV Sun and Jon Ralston on Sunday, July 18, 2010 | 2 a.m.
Declared "Sharron Angle is dead"
An ebullient Jon Ralston wants Harry Reid to "unfurling a "Mission Accomplished" banner in their headquarters"
Jon cites Greg Sargent and Jon believes "This suggests that Reid's scorched-earth strategy of dropping a ton of negative advertising on Angle - in order to rapidly define her as extreme, dangerous and temperamentally unfit for the Senate before her campaign gets under way - may be working,"
Jon further brags "His [Harry Reid's] strategy of driving people away from Angle and into either a "none of the above" posture or a oh-how-it-pains-me-to-vote-for-him stance has worked to perfection.
Jon crows that "Reid will apply a tourniquet to Angle's fundraising"
Jon's last line is 100 day ahead of the election "The [Angle] race is lost."
///////////////////////////////////////////////
So Jon Ralston is PROUD of the way he and the LV SUN have campaigned for and willing Harry Reid to win by ducking the issues and trashing, trashing, trashing his opponent with a $25 million scorched-earth attack.
There has never been a question Jon Ralston mind that anything goes in re-election of his BFF Too Big Too Fail Harry Reid.
/////////////////////////////////////////////
Never again will Jon Ralston or the LV Sun have any credibility on "reporting" (LOL) on an issue. They do not believe in issues.

Reid the flip flopper. He must made a comment saying that Nevada's construction industry does not have one illegal alien working in it. Is he really that far out of touch? We are inundated with illegal immigration/immigrants and not one of our leaders is willing to help the citizens or enforce our laws. VOTE OUT THE INCUMBENTS, all of them starting with Harry Reid and his son.
Words, words, words --- they don't mean a darn thing! Upwards of 20 million illegal aliens who are living here make demands on our hospitals, welfare and education systems that cause serious strains on our budgets, not to mention the millions we spend accomodating them with assistance because they refuse to learn English. Mexican drug dealers are part of the illegal communities and they use the network of illegals to move drugs into every corner of this nation. Mexican gangs intimidate law enforcement because the weapons they bring in have our cops out-gunned. A little-known fact is communicable diseases are skyrocketing. This is serious stuff like TB and leprosy.
Politicians like Reid give it lip service, while suing the State of Arizona for actually wanting to DO something to solve the problem.
The problem is so widespread that, yes, the federal government is overwhelmed. It's true, they don't have the resources to enforce immigration law all over the country on their own.
The solution is simple. If border patrol does not immediately turn them around when they sneak in at the border, we can and still should enforce the law. Individual states should be given the authority to identify and detain illegal aliens, conduct hearings and then direct their deportations.
In this nation, we respect the law...we follow the law...we enforce the law! Deportation is the appropriate penalty for entering this country illegally. We have skilled, competent law enforcement personnel in every state, county and city. We can do this. We can use buses, trains, planes. We can do a massive deportation. Yes we can! Yes we can!
Obama's Best Bet on Immigration
In 2008 in the middle of the night behind closed doors Nancy Pelosi used a war supplement bill to give protected status to 1.35 million illegal agriculture workers who had already been working here in the US for 45 months and their extended families which amounted to over 3 million (then) illegal's. That is more people than is needed across the states to work fields.
Our borders are not secure and citizens of all states are so angry at the law suit filed against Arizona, that in 4 days people from all 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico, have donated over $500k to help the Arizona legal defence. There are millions of illegal aliens which can prove their illegal residency here for eight or nine years minimum, and most have a form of documentation with a pay stub, rent receipt, an anchor expense, CHIP enrolment (something). Starting in 2007 campaign innuendoes broke the record with the highest influx of border jumper's in any given presidential election cycle. President Obama said the immigration rules are "unenforceable" for local law, I wonder if this is because of the vast numbers of illegal's and drug cartels spread throughout our nation?
Since this administration is so sure there are only 12 million illegal aliens in the US, and Ellis Island has been updated, and much the same is in Florida to document immigrants. Consider: Absolutely NO social security or voting rights until becoming a legal English speaking citizen for 10 years to the date of meeting the crime restitution requirements. Once the twelve million numbers of illegals is reached (documented) DEPORT the other 16 million left over.
The unemployment rate for veterans rose in June, to 11.5 percent for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Hire some of them to work with their local law serving the people of their own hometowns and surrounding communities. These veterans already have government run VA healthcare for five years running, and could save struggling towns short on law enforcement to actually save local tax monies (feds employ vets), while also saving local tax funds used toward the healthcare insurance for local law enforcement. There are more than enough already trained unemployed veterans to help deport all 28 million illegal border jumpers.
Two other presidents already enforced immigration laws to employ war vets, this would be the third time, and because it is for national security this time will be the charm. This time we permanently secure our borders. President Obama recently said "Our borders are just too vast for us to be able to solve the problem only with fences and border patrols," and he said "It won't work." Seems the old adage is still working fine because Mr. Obama's best bet is to hire the vets.
compromise is the key . fines are punishment . amnesty is total forgiveness with no punishment . with sen Reid s current immigration bill all these people will have to undergo a background - security ck and a medical ck . this gives us a chance to sort through and remove all the bad apples . then all will have a tax # so they can pay taxes. those that are unwilling to compromise can take the blame for the 5 dollar heads of lettuce that mass deportation will bring along with the suffering comparable to the deportations of the Jews ,American Indians and Armenians
An interesting scenario; Politicians have been discussing our illegal immigration situation for years now. Yet, our border with Mexico is still wide open to millions more illegals (including terriorists) crossing every year.
Isn't there anyone in Washington with enough brains to stop this ridiculous invasion?
harry's position is still better than psycho sharron's...
much much better...
if i was an immigrant psycho sharron would scare the ever loving crap out of me...
hey ralston...
psycho sharron is all done...
time for you to focus on sandoval the coward...
did the sun forget about that maggot???
To Future:
Don't get too excited about Mr. Ralston's Sunday article, everyone know not to take polls seriously until after Labor Day. It must have been a slow news week to make him write that at this point!!
A few thoughts:
"Comprehensive Immigration Reform" is code speak for "Amnesty". Simple as that!! Seal the border and enforce the laws we have on the books now. It's really that simple!!
A few weeks ago, President Obama gave a speech where he pretty much gave up and said it is "impossible" to close the border and deal with this situation. Can you imagine what would have happened had we a President like him when WWII was on the horizon? (We'd all be speaking German). This is America, we have always accomplished the impossible!!
Reagan did amnesty and the only part he forgot was border security. No new laws until the border is under control!! That is just plain common sense.
It seems that almost everyone is putting the cart before the horse here.
Sealing the border, as most people mean it, simply is not practical, and probably not possible without a full time military presence such as existed in Germany before that country was reunited.
What needs to be done first is to take away the incentives for illegal immigration in the first place. Enforce the laws that prohibit hiring illegal workers, and deny all social services (including education) to all illegal immigrants.
Once that has been done, the flow of incoming illegal residents should decrease dramatically to a much more manageable level at the borders.
I find it interesting that Mormon Reid is married to a jewish person. Well, I suppose they are both Zionists. Mormons call non-Mormons gentiles just like the Jews do.
And besides, what does Reid's wife's nationality have to do with anything? Did her relatives enter the U.S. illegally? I doubt it. His wife's story is just an excuse to flip flop on the issue of illegal aliens.
In your heart you know that the politicians are not going to support us in the matter of illegal aliens. The will of the people is going to be ignored.
Great job wedo, you have learned the open-borders talking points like a highly functional robot.
For those talking about psycho Sharron, how about sociopathic Harry?
"Isn't there anyone in Washington with enough brains to stop this ridiculous invasion?"
It's not about brains. It's about the politicians being willing to destroy the future of our country in order to make a fast buck today.
Tired of having the will over the people ignored? Had it with the "immigrants"? Tired of the flip-flopping and words words words?

Well, Reid's a pro if nothing else. If he thinks pandering to Hispanics by supporting amnesty is a good political move, he's probably right. But, personally, I have the feeling that this topic is the one thing that could lose him the election, and that he'd be better off supporting serious enforcement of immigration law.
You might say that the economy is Angle's issue, but she's already made a fool of herself, and contradicted herself, by both blaming Harry for unemployment and saying that it wouldn't be her job as a Senator to bring jobs here. She has also admitted that she would not have interceded in City Center.
Anybody else out there think that immigration could be Reid's Achilles' heel?
But, wedo, once these people become citizens and have rights, who employs them will have to follow labor laws. How about the millions more who will have to come to replace the cheap, powerless labor that amnesty would make into more expensive, less powerless workers? Amnesty for them in another 20 years? Let's just keep bringing in masses of poor people and allowing the population to grow at an unprecedented level so that the rich can have their slave labor? That's what this issue is about, and that's all it's really about: cheap, powerless labor. How is amnesty going to fix that if the laws are not then enforced, which they won't be?
I think that Nevada having the highest unemployment in the nation coupled with the highest percentage of illegal workers in the nation will be the only real issue by the time November comes around. Reid can not defend his statements about immigration "reform".
It is predictable that at least 8.5 million illegal workers are employed in America. That the Federation for American Immigration Reform states, that yearly taxpayer pays out 113 billion dollars in extra taxes to underwrite welfare programs for illegal aliens and their families. This does not embrace $60 billion a year that leaves America in workers remittances to other countries. Those who want to keep more money in their pockets, better start bombarding their Senator and Congressmen- Women in their home state. Democratic majority leader Incumbent Harry Reid (D-NV) in the Senate virtually killed E-Verify, 287 (G) enforcement.
That's an affirmative purpose to need universal policing laws on July 29 enacted in Arizona, until the US government does its job. So far they have failed to build the double fence between the Mexico and the US. If the federal courts state that Arizona's law is unconstitutional, then they had better be ready for a public outcry like never before. This will place the focus on cities that have remained outside federal law in encouraging Sanctuary Cities. This is a betrayal of the American taxpayer as they are subsidizing illegal nationals living in a Sanctuary states like California. Again, the federal government has failed to take into custody those responsible for repudiating federal law.
Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A): A person ( including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government ) commits a federal felony when she or he: (1) assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or (2) encourages that alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way. Another fact is why bother with any immigration law, if illegal entry is not a felony as with most industrialized nations of the world?
In addition, the federal government is charged to defend each state under the US Constitution. SPEAK WITH FORKED TONGUE?
Amnesty that was purportedly to halt these violations in the workplace; no administration has solidly enforced these laws. Now with the inception of E-Verify, that has been increasingly modified, an updated program with strong safeguards, its growing technology can detect stolen documents and sham social security numbers. Republican Senator Jeff Sessions introduced an amendment in 2009 that would have made E-Verify permanent and mandatory for all, but especially for construction companies. Senator Reid did not allow the idea to come up for a vote and the evidence is there that Reid tried to kill E-Verify from the beginning. The 2009 numbers show Nevada is a state with one of the highest percentage of "unauthorized immigrants" in the labor force. Reid's office also downplayed E-Verify as inaccurate, citing recent Social Security Administration numbers.
But the federal government's (GAO) own contracted accountants; established E-Verify worked 99-percent of the time. Harry Reid was not always an ardent crusader of amnesty for the 18 and up-- million illegal aliens in America. Reid once called illegal aliens "free loaders and scam artists." which he proposed to deal with in his Immigration Stabilization Act in the United States Senate in 1993." That proposed legislation was presented to the floor of the US Senate with the subsequent press release, in part, issued by Reid's office on August 5, 1993." When responding to increased terrorism and abuse of social welfare programs by illegal aliens, Harry Reid announced the first and only comprehensive immigration reform bill in Congress.
Sharon Angle campaign is dead. People know Reid is a good-old boy at heart. This story helps him.
ANYBODY...............but Reid!!!
Harry Reid was being completely disingenuous when he stated:
"This period of time for which I am so apologetic -- to my family, mostly -- lasted about a week or two."
The fact is that Harry Reid was the sponsor of the Immigration Stabilization Act not only in 1993, but also again in 1994. This was a deliberately crafted and a comprehensive bill to address illegal and mass immigration. He made a number of speeches on the Senate floor regarding the bill over the course of at least a year, eloquently outlining all of the ways that an amnesty would harm American citizens.
Indeed, Harry Reid was against amnesty before he was for it. And, once upon a time, he was a patriot, before he was for open borders.
I think this supports my opinion that Reid used to have Nevada's best interests at heart. Things have changed a lot since since first term.
Reid supported Nevada's amendment to the state's constitution to ban gay marriage.
He also voted for DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) which allows Nevada to ignore gay marriages from other states.
He has never apologized for those so I guess he is stills happy with those stands and neither are his "biggest mistake" or "largest error" ever made.
Is Reid a bigot?
Don't federal politicians take an oath to uphold the Constitution?
A look at Act IV, Section 4 - Republican government, shows that it reads:
"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion."
The best way to "protect them against invasion" would be to enforce the employment laws against the employers with the same vigor the War on Drugs is executed.
Given time, there would be a giant sucking sound from the illegal immigrants going back to Mexico.
What do you say we try enforcing the immigration laws we have and see how that works for us?
Why don't we just give'em all amnesty? That way they can work under the table and collect unemployment. Undercut middle class wages creating another dependant class...the possibilities for the dumbocrat party are endless.
Harry is for Harry - We saw that with 'amnesty' and we saw it with the shocking outburst when he screamed; 'The War in Iraq is Lost'! This stunning outburst occurred on the floor of the US Senate - in wild-eyed, Howard Dean-like fashion!
The astounding implications of America's # 2 US Senator making such statements - with complete naivete and disregard to the speed and reach of the "Information Super Highway" where his unauthorized outburst was translated to Arabic, Farsi and Persian and disseminated in less than 60 minutes from the time he yelled it - AND how such statements embolden our enemy on the battle field - makes Harry Reid unqualified for public office.
You don't have to support any War or George Bush -- to understand the damage he did on that day -- to our troops and to America.
Harry's rants are a direct result of republican taunts. His direction may be swayed around election time, but his heart it is always good.
Supporting and educating those children 'born' here to illegals, is our best hope of saving Mexico. Yes save, we are the problem, until we deal with the crime, poverty and drugs, we will support, as we should, those that have no other options.
And believing we can exist without them, is not financially sound due to our 'zeal for the deal'-chalk one up for China also.
Our goal should be "Tear down this wall," not build it.
Talking about dirty laundry! I am glad Senator Reid had a change of heart regarding his inmigration policy of 1993 -that I think- if implemented- would have had devastating effects for the inmigrant community here, as well as in the International relations bettween the US and the rest of the World.
Not dobubt about it... such use of this extreme measure would had pleased the racist zealot elements in Washington back in 1993 and today, but would have been -in my opinion- what amounts to a political suicide for Senator Reid- as your commentary suggests!! I was not aware of such missteps...Thanks Sun and Mr. Raslton!!
Jon Ralston ist one of the best in the business. I like his "in your face" style when conducting interviews. It doesn't matter what side they're on, he confronts everyone and wants an honest answer. He also catches many of them in lies and there has been a lot of stuttering going on after he landed a good one.
After saying that, I do not understand why Jon doesn't seem to be too concerned or compelled to address what has the majority of people in Nevada riled up. It is the hot button issue of illegal aliens (yes, they are NOT immigrants) and the fact that tax payers are fed up with supporting these people. We wouldn't need unemployment extensions if we put people back to work in the jobs now filled by illegals. In the mean time we pay for more and more in benefits for the ever increasing number of illegals and their offspring. Nevadans are NOT lazy and will do these jobs.
All eyes are on Arizona right now awaiting the judges decision to let the new Arizona law stand. Even the most broad minded and liberal person will have to agree that even here in Nevada something has to be done about the situation.
Come on Jon, let's try not being so politically correct and tell it as it is. You will have the support of 80% of Nevadans.
boftx... You are one of the few that actually knows what you're talking about. What about angry voter? Does he honestly think that illegals pay ANY kind of property taxes? Living 20 to 25 in an apartment is probably pretty lucrative for the home owner, especially since the 10 or so adults that live in that apartment work under the table and can afford to pay the rent. The home owners make a fortune of these people charging rent per head. They also don't care that their places look like the slums the illegals came from.
Some day people will wake up and see in what direction our country is headed. Lets hope it's not when we're called Mexamerica.
Harry Reid's record shows that his position on any subject depends on his bank book. Not his dear wife or his thoughts.
Before a speech, he checks to see how much money that group gave him, or not, than decides on how to speak or how to vote.
Jon Ralston is nothing but a toothless mouth piece for Senator Reid, and his campaign , I watched his interview with Sharon, he tried time after time to set her up, before she could even answer a question he was on to another, he was so anxious he almost spit in his face, he constantly attacked her, while everything that he said about dirty harry was perfect; his attacks on her only proved that he is a cronie for Reid, he is a fool to think that the campaign is over, Sharon Angle will defeat Senator Reid. I work as an independent contractor in the L.V Valley in the construction industry, 90% are foreign workers, 100% are illegal immigrants, Citizens have lost their homes, jobs, American families are being torn apart, and yet some are concerned about the Hispanic vote, and what will happen to illegal immigrants and their families; There are people from Hispanic origin who are offended by how illegal's just walk across our borders, when legal immigrants came here the right way., Americans are sick and tired of hearing about which way someone will vote. While there is still enough of real Americans left, we'd better stick together, what if you had your doors, and windows opened at your house, your family is inside, your wife, your children, your possessions, what will happen? You will be taken advantage of, and while America is being robbed and raped, people like Reid, and Jon Ralston are prying her legs open even wider. Senator Harry, Rolston, Obama, it is time for a change, As a Black American I encourage all Blacks to send Reid packing, I don't owe any allegiance to Mexico, that crap about minorities sticking together is bunk. There are less of US working than any other race. I left the Democratic Party because of people like Reid, and Obama have not done a damn thing for any of us, he is suppose to be a President for all Americans, and just minorities, he seem to be racist, so all of you White democrats, you should also think about what this president is doing, he don't seem to care about America, he has a global agenda
Harry said, "the biggest mistake I ever made, the largest error I ever made was 15 or 18 years ago "A group of people came and talked to us and convinced us that the thing to do would be to close the borders between Mexico and the United States; in effect, stop people from coming across our borders to the United States."
Sounds like now he encourages illegal activity. But then, don't criminals stick together?
Vote for Sharron Angle, Reid speaks out of both sides of his mouth.
Each time I see Sharron Angle I forget I am pissed at Harry Reid who is the lessor of more right wing evil & hate
Sorry but I have to take my chances with old Harry & hope for the best

Give us all a break The only reason Harry is going to try to force amnesty into law is because his democrap party needs the votes. Harry obviously quit representing the voters who sent him to Washington and now is Obama's henchman.
Harry you old crook, it's time for you to go!!!
Jon Ralston's busy trying to do damage control for the old crook Harry Reid.
We all know this rag and Ralston have been in Reid's pocket from the beginning, so anything written here is meaningless!
Dirty Harry refuses to make the E-Verify system law in this state. Hoping to get the mexican vote to save his job.
Meanwhile, good American citizens in Las Vegas are out of work because of all the illegals doing their jobs in the hotels/casinos. And even in the construction trades.
The only thing you have to stop Dirty Harry is your VOTE! Use it or you lose!
Cain will run for president and he will win.
God bless Arizona, at least they're trying.
