Criminal charges against former UNLV linebackers coach Ty Gregorak were dropped by the Boulder (Colo.) County District Attorney on Friday morning.
Gregorak was charged with vehicular trespassing and theft following an incident that took place while out with friends in his old college town on April 30.
He was accused of stealing a gun, sunglasses, wallet, bottle of cologne and other items from the car of strip club bouncer Joseph Benedetto. After seeing the items in his hotel room the next morning and saying he didn't know how they came into his possession, Gregorak returned them to Benedetto at his home, the two men shook hands and then parted ways. Benedetto called the police and charges were pressed.
Gregorak's attorney, David M. Beller, released a statement Friday afternoon stating that the defense's investigation established that the parking garage attendant, who was within close proximity of Benedetto's car, did not observe anyone breaking into it. Also noted was that hotel staff did not see a gun or any of the listed items on Gregorak that night, and the several friends Gregorak was with that night said that they did not see the items and that he was not intoxicated while with them.
Four fingerprints were lifted from Benedetto's car. Two of them were insufficient for comparison, the third was identified as not belonging to Gregorak and the fourth was not of sufficient quality to include or exclude Gregorak. Boulder police did not attempt to lift prints from any of the items returned to Benedetto.
Gregorak is currently living in Spokane, Wash., and looking for new coaching opportunities.
After urging Gregorak to resign, UNLV filled his vacated position by hiring former Utah State head coach Brent Guy as its new linebackers coach on June 16.
"I am grateful that this whole ordeal is finally over," Gregorak said in the statement. "Perhaps someday I will learn what happened to me that night, but as of now, I still do not know. My story has always been consistent and has never changed. This has been a nightmare for me and my family.
"I look forward to getting back to coaching and putting this behind me."

"Perhaps someday I will learn what happened to me that night, but as of now, I still do not know."
Wow. Regardless of the charges being dropped, I am glad he is no longer coaching at UNLV. Drinking to the point of blackout - by his own admission - does not set a good example for any student-athlete.
wtk2-No proof that it was alcohol that caused the loss of memory. Yes he was drinking but this story is so strange that it's not out of of the question that Gregorak was drugged.
One of the strangest stories I ever hear. Can't even make this up. In any case, hope hge gets on the right track again.
Oh, and he looks like Peter Griffin on Family Guy: http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/518/p...
shook hands and then parted. benedetto then called police. if u shake hands and then call police your a "backstabber" or a buddyFu.... as i used to hear mil days.
What do you call someone who blames the victim? Maybe he shook hands with him just to get rid of him.
The man shows up with a loaded gun he stole from you...You are unarmed, and you tell me you aren't going to shake hands to get him away from you?
hdsidecar - So let me get this straight, if someone stole your gun and had it for the night and then returned it to you you would not also notify the police? What if the gun had been used in a crime the night before? You would have to be pretty dense to not file a police report to protect yourself in the event it was used during the commission of a crime. It sounds like Benedetto did the right thing with the exception of leaving a loaded gun in an UNLOCKED car, duh!
You are all over the top on this. it is clear now that coach G. did not break into this car as an attendant was within yards of it throughout the night. Maybe just a really stupid joke gone horribly bad. Never the less, this has clearly ruined his life as of now, and for all you high and mighty SOB's hope your never having a beer, or good time anywhere in your life soon. Too bad that UNLV can't have the same standards for everyone, if a football coach get's charged you'r fired! If your a basketball player we'll wait and see what the outcome is. Double Standard? NOT! Just the UNLV way! Welcome, coach Hauck.
