Pedestrian in hit-and-run crash dies; no charges filed

Approximate site man struck

A 52-year-old pedestrian involved in a hit-and-run collision Saturday in North Las Vegas died Monday from injuries suffered in the accident, police said today.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office has identified the man as Steven Michael Rahman of Las Vegas. He died of multiple blunt force injuries caused by the collision, the coroner’s office said.

Police spokesman Tim Bedwell said no charges were filed against the 89-year-old driver and her 90-year-old husband, who was a passenger, because Rahman likely was at fault and the two apparently didn't knowingly leave the scene of the collision.

Authorities said Rahman was struck about 9:10 p.m. Saturday in the 3400 block of West Lake Mead Boulevard, near Texas Station, by a car that left the scene. Medical personnel found him in the road between Simmons Street and Rancho Drive, police said.

On Sunday, the elderly couple reported to police that their vehicle was damaged by a thrown object the previous night. A family member who saw a news report about the hit-and-run had suspected the couple might have been involved in the collision.

After the family contacted investigators, police determined the couple's 2007 Hyundai Accent was the vehicle involved in the incident, Bedwell said.

Police said the couple felt the impact of the collision, but never saw Rahman and thought someone had thrown something at their vehicle. They didn't consider it safe to stop in the area, so they continued home and called police on Sunday, Bedwell said.

Rahman died Monday at University Medical Center. Authorities said the couple hasn't faced charges because they didn’t know they had struck the pedestrian when they left the accident scene. Investigators and the Clark County District Attorney’s Office are reviewing the case.

This is the sixth traffic fatality in North Las Vegas this year.
