Henderson Police release officer’s name in fatal shooting

The Henderson Police officer who fatally shot a man Saturday morning after a standoff with officers has been identified as Brian Pollard, who has been with the department since 1994.

Officers responded at about 6:50 a.m. Saturday to the home at 618 Severn St., which is near Greenway Road and East Horizon Drive, after receiving a 911 call about a man threatening his wife. When officers arrived, the woman quickly was able to exit the home but her 15-year-old son was still inside, police said.

For the next hour, officers asked the man -- identified Tuesday by the Clark County's Coroner's Office as Richard Bernard Nolton, 42, from Henderson -- to come outside and surrender numerous times.

At 8:05 a.m., police said Nolton left the home and confronted officers with a handgun. Officers repeatedly told him to drop the gun and surrender, which he didn't, authorities said. Police said his actions "forced an officer to fire."

Nolton was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner said he died of a gunshot wound to the neck. The teen wasn't injured, police said.

Pollard was placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated, which is standard policy in cases of officer-involved shootings.
