Boxing trainer Roger Mayweather appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the alleged beating and choking of a female boxer last August at a Las Vegas apartment.

Mayweather, 48, is the uncle and trainer of boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. He was set to be arraigned Tuesday on felony charges of coercion, battery-strangulation and battery with substantial bodily harm in connection with the alleged assault but didn’t show up for court. His attorney, Jack Buchanan, promised Mayweather would appear today – which he did. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and a trial date was set for June 1.

No mention was made of his missed appearance. Mayweather declined to comment after the brief hearing.

Clark County District Court Hearing Master Kevin Williams had threatened a bench warrant at Tuesday’s hearing if Mayweather failed to appear today. Prosecutors said they were concerned about Mayweather’s history of not coming to court and cited 50 failures to appear in his record, including a failure to appear Oct. 2 for arraignment on the charges in justice court.

A bench warrant was issued at that time, but it was quashed about a week later.

Mayweather’s alleged victim, Melissa St. Vil, testified Jan. 15 that Mayweather entered her apartment in the 700 block of Rock Springs Drive, near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard, and started a physical altercation that left her bruised and in severe pain.

Mayweather was arrested after the scuffle but is no longer in custody after posting $13,000 bail.
