While brutally cold temperatures and wind chills rip through the Midwest, Las Vegas residents will be able to get out in shirtsleeves again today.
The National Weather Service is forecasting partly sunny skies with a high this afternoon reaching near 65 degrees in the Las Vegas Valley, along with calm winds becoming east-northeast around 5 mph.
That's a big difference from the Midwest, where frigid weather is sending wind chills down to 52 degrees below zero in North Dakota, negative 40 in South Dakota and minus 27 in Nebraska.
In contrast, Las Vegas was getting relatively warm temperatures this morning for this time of year.
At 5:56 a.m., McCarran International Airport's temperature was 46 degrees, which is 10 degrees above the normal low of 36 degrees for today's date. The record low for today's date is 15 degrees, set in 1971.
Around the valley just before 7 a.m., temperatures were 45 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 42 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 42 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.
The weather service said a weak storm system will move across Lincoln, Clark and Mohave Counties today, resulting in a chance of light showers over the mountains. But otherwise, high pressure will continue to create dry conditions and above-normal temperatures today, forecasters said.
They predict temperatures in the valley will rise to 48 degrees by 9 a.m., to 59 degrees by noon and reach a high of 65 degrees by 3 p.m. The normal high for today's date is 56 degrees and the record high is 75 degrees, set in 1962.
Temperatures will drop overnight to a low of 41 degrees by early Friday morning, the weather service said. Friday's high will climb to 62 degrees, with mostly sunny skies and a light north to northwest wind, forecasters said.
Relatively warm afternoon weather is expected to continue in the valley through the middle of next week, with lows in the low 40s and highs in the low to mid 60s, forecasters said.

Is nobody going to respond to this? It's good news about Vegas!!! Where are all the haters talking about how they miss the changing seasons, beautiful snow, risk of skin cancer in Vegas, how they are sick of blue skys and long for gray, their hatrid of wearing short sleeve shirts, the wish to be able to wear that "cool" winter jacket in their closet, etc, etc. Come on people...show some negativity will ya. We all know the good weather is only due to some gov't experiment that Obama (personally) is doing to make us feel good about our crappy economy. Oh WAIT...global warming! There is an angle....let's hear it.
While the weather is unusually nice for this time of year...more normal or average temperatures 56 - 36 degrees would be great too!
Where are all the climate change deniers? I mean, every time we have a little cold streak they're out in droves.
I will take some of that skin cancer causing sun & warmth today in Toronto. Although you guys can keep your summers..
Sergio, were you raped in prison?
Ah....thank you all. What is the Las Vegas Sun without these fights in the Comments section. Thank you for helping me prove my point. Regardless of the article, there is always going to be some moron that can find something negative to write.
On another note....who names their son(?) Sergio....buahahahaha!!!
ok.....SERGIO. Du___e bag. (fill in the blank). buahahahaha
Seeeeerrrrrrrggggiiioooooo...the "prophet" Didn't Joseph Smith call himself a prophet too?
Ostensibly is APPARANTLY your favorite word of the week that. You seem to use it quite a bit. Trying to make yourself look intelligent...put down the thesaurus?
homie?
You are truly a tool. You have a good vocabulary because you work with lawyers and accountants? Not sure what the connection is there. Let me guess...you work at the county...for now.
