Warm streak continues in Las Vegas

While bitter cold blasts through the Midwest, southern Nevada staying warmer than usual

Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010 | 6:56 a.m.

While brutally cold temperatures and wind chills rip through the Midwest, Las Vegas residents will be able to get out in shirtsleeves again today.

The National Weather Service is forecasting partly sunny skies with a high this afternoon reaching near 65 degrees in the Las Vegas Valley, along with calm winds becoming east-northeast around 5 mph.

That's a big difference from the Midwest, where frigid weather is sending wind chills down to 52 degrees below zero in North Dakota, negative 40 in South Dakota and minus 27 in Nebraska.

In contrast, Las Vegas was getting relatively warm temperatures this morning for this time of year.

At 5:56 a.m., McCarran International Airport's temperature was 46 degrees, which is 10 degrees above the normal low of 36 degrees for today's date. The record low for today's date is 15 degrees, set in 1971.

Around the valley just before 7 a.m., temperatures were 45 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 42 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 42 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

The weather service said a weak storm system will move across Lincoln, Clark and Mohave Counties today, resulting in a chance of light showers over the mountains. But otherwise, high pressure will continue to create dry conditions and above-normal temperatures today, forecasters said.

They predict temperatures in the valley will rise to 48 degrees by 9 a.m., to 59 degrees by noon and reach a high of 65 degrees by 3 p.m. The normal high for today's date is 56 degrees and the record high is 75 degrees, set in 1962.

Temperatures will drop overnight to a low of 41 degrees by early Friday morning, the weather service said. Friday's high will climb to 62 degrees, with mostly sunny skies and a light north to northwest wind, forecasters said.

Relatively warm afternoon weather is expected to continue in the valley through the middle of next week, with lows in the low 40s and highs in the low to mid 60s, forecasters said.
