Rain, snow moving into Las Vegas area
Winter weather advisory issued for Sheep Range, Spring Mountains, Red Rock Canyon
Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 | 7:51 a.m.
If you go outdoors today, dress for cool, wet weather — there's a 90 percent chance of rain in the Las Vegas area, according to the National Weather Service.
A strong Pacific storm moving across the region will produce widespread valley rain and heavy mountain snow through tonight, the weather service said. Local mountain tops will be obscured, they said.
The weather service has issued a winter weather advisory from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the Sheep Range, the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon west of Las Vegas. Drivers are urged to be prepared for snow-covered road with limited visibility, forecasters said.
Snow is expected to fall in elevations of 5,000 feet and above, forecasters said. Elevations above 5,500 feet in the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range areas can expect between 4 to 7 inches, forecasters said. Elevations above 5,500 feet in Lincoln County can expect 3 to 6 inches, forecasters said.
High pressure will build in over the area on Sunday and Monday after the storm moves into the Southern Rockies, forecasters said. Then another storm system will move through the Great Basin during the middle of the week, they said.
At 6:56 a.m., the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 47 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 44 degrees and the record low was 19 degrees, set in 1971.
Around the valley just before 8 a.m., temperatures were 50 degrees at McCarran, 50 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 50 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 46 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.
Temperatures are expected to rise to 50 degrees by 9 a.m., to 54 degrees by noon and reach a high of 56 degrees by 2 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 66 degrees and the record high is 83 degrees, set in 1986.
If you're going out tonight, temperatures will be 53 degrees at 6 p.m., 50 degrees at 9 p.m. and 48 degrees at midnight, forecasters said.
Sunday's morning low will be 45 degrees and Sunday's high will reach 65 degrees, forecasters said.
