Appeal causes high school basketball playoffs to be delayed
Western will have its appeal heard tomorrow afternoon
Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010 | 3:13 p.m.
The Sunset Region boys basketball tournament officially is postponed, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association announced Wednesday.
An appeal filed by Western High School in District Court in regards to games it forfeited for using an ineligible player caused the postponement. The eight-team tournament was scheduled to begin tonight.
Western finished the regular season in second with a 13-3 record in the Southwest Division. But the Warriors used an ineligible player, which forced them to forfeit four games and miss the playoffs.
They appealed the NIAA's decision of forfeiture, but it was upheld. An eligible player then brought the matter to court and the judge sided with the NIAA. Now, Western is filing a level-two appeal with the NIAA.
An independent hearing officer will listen to Western's case at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. After that decision is made, the tournament will be re-scheduled appropriately.

At what point does the Western basketball team quit delaying the inevitable? The athletic department at Western messed up and the team pays the price. Those are the rules and that's the way life is. Western has a good team, but the rules are the rules.
Agreed, vegasbike. The rules are the rules, and Western broke them. Simple as that. Not a misunderstanding, not an accident, the rules were broken. I feel for the players, but that is one of the duties of the coach.
