LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Obama’s words no help for industries treading wate

Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 | 2:03 a.m.

When the leader of the greatest free nation on Earth speaks and makes recommendations, people listen and people follow. After all, what kind of leader are you if you cannot inspire people to follow?

This is why people in this area are so floored by the recent suggestion by President Barack Obama to not spend your money in Vegas or on a boat when saving for college.

We know people only hear half the message at best. In this case, the message was to not go to Vegas and don’t spend your money on boats. People will follow the recommendations. This will mean fewer people will come to Vegas and our educational revenue will suffer as a result. It also means people will put off buying a boat (no matter how inexpensive), helping sink another low-margin, barely-holding-on industry and all of the employed people associated with it. Sound familiar?

A responsible way of getting across the same message is: “When you are saving for your college education, you need to be careful how you spend your hard-earned money for your future.”

On another matter, my hat is off to Mayor Oscar Goodman, who instantly knew the ramifications of Obama’s remark and responded as a politician who truly believes he represents the people who elected him in a world where politicians only represent themselves.

Maybe the next time President Obama wants to make a point about saving money for college, he should suggest not spending money on a fancy expensive vacation in Hawaii, or not buying a new $30,000 car from Detroit, or not placing a sports bet in Dover, Del., or not spending your money on wasteful, unhealthy cigarettes.
