Cox Communications announces price increases
Consumers to pay more for several cable, phone and Internet services
Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 | 2:05 a.m.
Cox Communications is raising its prices on several of its cable, phone and Internet services beginning in March, the company told subscribers Tuesday.
“Today’s prices reflect the cost of programming, which has gone up nearly 10 percent from 2009 to 2010 as well as the increased costs of doing business which have escalated dramatically in the past 12 months,” Cox said in an e-mail to subscribers.
For residents in the Las Vegas Valley, the price of Cox Limited Basic Cable, which includes 44 channels of local broadcast, will increase by about $3 to $16.04 a month.
For subscribers to receive all 44 channels, an HD digital converter box is needed and that price is increasing by $2.25 to $7 a month.
Cox Preferred Basic Service, which includes 96 channels, will also increase by about $3, bringing the total to $54 a month. Increases in prices for premium channels will range from $1 to $4.49 a month, depending on the number of channels.
Both the HD receiver and the HD DVR will now cost $2.25 more a month. The price of Cox DVR service, however, will decrease by about $2.
Basic monthly telephone service will increase by $2.59 to $12.99 a month. Cox high-speed Internet service is also going up $2 a month.
The company is raising prices in several regions, including Southern California, where prices are increasing between 3.6 and 10 percent, the the Orange County Register reported last week.

keep on raising prices u will loose a customer and go to dish
GREAT... My pay check is down the economy is down house prices are down;;
but guess what
Water prices go up
power prices go up
gas prices go up
I think I am going to go to dish network.. Now it not the time to raise YOUR prices... let it begin... ACTIONS ARE GOING TO SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.... STOP SERVICE AND GO DISH !
The problem is how to get rid of these greedy B*stards. Phone, no problem, use a cell. Cable, use the Dish, better picture anyway. Internet is the problem. All we have otherwise is Clear, not sure if it is reliable. Any ideas?
Direct dish TV is the way to go!!
fortunately, cable tv is not a need, so we can drop them any time we want if we don't like their pricing. Don't complain. if you don't like thier prices just drop them. easy.
i have the most basic package - mostly so i can get a signal. channels 1 - 17 (half of those are either shopping or spanish channels) and a few channels in the 100's that i never flip to so i don't even know what's up there. i'm thinking i could just cancel the tv alltogether and be fine - the internet can serve as our link to the broader world for purposes of information needs, etc...
time spent staring at the tv is basically wasted anyway.
I just get the high speed Internet service from Cox Communications. I usually just watch movies downloaded off Apple TV, so not having the TV option from Cox suits me.
I'll miss the TV service this Super Bowl Sunday, though. :( I may have to go seek out a TV for that.
Prices are only going to increase as time goes on as they're trying to make up revenue from lost customers. Soon only the richest people can afford cable and they're happy to pay 10k a month for it. LOL
Fine - we will switch to satellite.
Correct netlivinginc. They're losing tons of customers in this economy so they raise prices to make up for lost revenue.
Only because they're a virtual monopoly are they able to stick it to their "valued subscribers".
Last year I cut off my premium channels. This time I'll go to the lower level of internet service.
I got rid of Cox last year because of their incessant price increases and pathetic customer service. Their only interest in the customer is in our wallets. I went to satellite and never looked back. The picture quality is vastly superior and when I call, they indicate that they value me as a customer. This is a no brainer.
Over a year ago, I cancelled cable and phone from Cox. Went to DirectTV for TV and PhonePower for phone. Saved me about $70/month in doing so. Now, all I have is internet from Cox and would really like to find a viable alternative. When I cancelled my services from Cox, they had to gall to give me a "reduced" price if I stayed with them. They should have given me that price right from the beginning. I predict many of their customers will switch over to a less expensive dish company (and the dish companies have more features and better service!).
Bye, Cox Communications...you used to be a great alternative, And now with Clearchannel and DirectTV and their insanely low packages, you are gonna end up writing a letter of apology to you're employees and they're former jobs and hopefully when that happens it won't be a couple weeks before the Holidays...
bye bye see ya Cox Cable!! Direct TV/Dish Network here I come!!
Where is the hate for Disney/ESPN? For Discovery? For all the other TV conglomerates?
You want to know why your bill keeps going up? Because ESPN includes 10% annual price increases in their contract with Cox. What are you going to do, go without ESPN? That's not an option for a lot of the viewers out there. The masses are addicted to their "circuses" and the content creators know they can continue to gouge consumers.
A la carte is a dream because congress doesn't have the guts to authorize the FCC to do it, and the FCC doesn't have the guts to write the regulations to make it happen. (And it would need to be a pile of regulations - because otherwise Disney/ABC would just contractually force Cox to pay $4/sub regardless of whether or not they choose to subscribe to ESPN)
Apple cant get here with their "best of" packages from the networks soon enough. Then I can cut Cox TV and go back to an antenna for local news.
I think in the future we wont be needed cox any longer. Their days are numbered and they know it.
For those of you who want to switch away from Cox, but cannot find an alternate for the internet. There is an answer. All of the cell phone companies offer USB based modems which communicate to the internet via cell phone signals. The cost for the modem is very cheap. The cost for data transferred depends on the amount of data and may or may not be cheap.
I have been using one for two years now and the technical performance has been excellent. Check with your cell phone company.
Goin with Clear Internet and Direct TV
When I signed up for service last September I was given a fixed rate for a whole year (under the impression that it could go up - likely - or down - unlikely) at the end of this "locked in" period. I for one will look closely at my bill in March/April to make sure they don't try to increase mine since as they say it is "locked in". If they do - it will be time to move on.
I can comment on Clear, I shut off cox services last year (phone, internet, cable). I use my cell, got the dish, and got clear for the cable . They are actually faster than Cox on internet speeds. No problems what so ever... Wish I would have done far sooner than I did. Clear charges me 25.00 per month... thats it, Cox was over 60.00 per month.
You decide, I am staying with what I got now. Cox can keep raising thier rates, but they lost me as a customer of over 16 years.
Great timing...just pass the costs on to us poor consumers who can't afford it..ever think of getting the cable operators together and telling the Producers that you won't their increases? If Cox and others don't pay the increases, they won't have anyone to sell to and the prices will come down...Simple math to me !
When we moved, Cox sent us a bill for $330+ dollars. We had to drive all the way across town to talk to a CSR. She said there was a glitch in the system and the computer thought we stole the box. Screw u COX! We are getting DirectTV and will be looking for other internet.
Dish network is great!!!!
Cox SUCKS! I didn't want to deal with a dish but if my bill goes up one cent again, They are history! Buy the way, I picked up one of those majic jack phone adapters, It's AWESOME!
If you're tired of paying for television you can hook up your digital television or a convert box to an antenna and get nearly 30 channels for free.
ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS, CW, My Network TV, Univision, Telefutura, Telemundo, PBS Create, Universal Sports, Estrella TV, Vegas TV, Mega TV, KEEN TV, CoolTV (music videos), RTV (classic tv shows) and many more are all available for free.
I do it and save $600+ a year.
I have been along time customer of Direct-TV and used Cox as a back-up in extra rooms. Cox are rip off artists because of a sweet contract, they will over charge you for Inernet if you do not buy premimum, they will add insurance without your approval. I recentely cancelled and always had a credit in my account 2 months in advance. It took me 4 months of phone calls, nasty reps to get my prepayment back. If you are 1 hour late with this poor excuse of a company wait till you see your late fee. There are better services out there that are a lot cheaper hope you all will look into. Maybe Clark County can stop giving them sweetheart deals and set up competion with another cable provider and then watch how Cox will beg for your business. It's time for our politicians to break up this monopoly.
I agree with one of the first posters, paychecks go down, everything else is going up, guess Im gonna need to find a better internet provider that wont charge an arm and leg for basic service, already went to dish and love it, F' cox greedy aholes
Cox needed the price increase for Steve Shorr hairdo, them bottles of hairspray are expensive....
What, you all want Fox News for free?? Have to support those Tea Parties somehow.
You guys said cox.

oh no! how will i ever afford the additional $36 a year! seriously, is anyone really surprised? big companies like cox and bank of america love to kick the customer when they're down. i'll take my business elsewhere, too.
THAT IS IT! Have been talkling about going to dish for months now & this is the straw that breaks the camels back.....by the way Cox Telephone service sucks, it is the first time that I have had my phone constantly go dead in the middle of a conversation. The channels that we get for over 100.00 a month are terrible, wasting over (I am guessing) 25 channels with spanish speaking channels???? I do not need that crap, I speak English, if I did not then I should be able to choose to have these channels. Why am I forced to have them? Idiots.
bam1969
"oh no! how will i ever afford the additional $36 a year"
Really has nothing to do with it.Its called a monopoly, and most consumers have nowhere else to run,so they stay with Cox.
I will be going to DirecTV,and clear for internet.
judging on the amount of negative comments, and the percentage of people posting,I reckon Cox may be in for some dropped customers in the forseeable future.
We will see how cordial your customer service reps are when you are losing subscribers on a daily basis
peace out
It's the same everywhere concerning the cable companies. At least it's the same crap where I'm living. We just have basic cable and it has FOUR frickin' shopping channels!! If we want to go to expanded basic, it goes from $29 a month to $70!!!!! I also wish we could pick and choose what channels we get and have your choices be done on a sliding scale, ie 50 channels that you REALLY want for $40 a month. Even when I had my 300+ channels on Cox, I never watched 90% of them but you end up paying for them. And that sucks.
Also, there are a lot of commercials for cable v. Direct TV or the Dish out here!!! Dog eat dog! It seems Direct TV is winning!!!
I like Cox internet but not the cable TV. Some channels do not work and no matter how many times I call and complain, they still do not work. I wonder if it will be cheaper to get another internet service and dish network?
Last item.......it was a nightmare getting a new cable box. I decided to pick it up myself and the lines were longer than the DMV! There were plenty of employees behind the counter talking and laughing, but only 2 actually helping the customers. I'll have to to do the math and see which will be cheaper.
I have clear internet and havnt had any problems and my direct tv has a better channel line up with more HD channels. Plus the picture and audio is much better than cox. Cox is just being COX because they think they can due to their monopoly. Cancel their arses.
Dropped them today - thanks dishclearguy!!!
i switched to dish network.. 24.99 for 12 months, then 39. after that... its still cheaper than cox.
That Ariel is going up this weekend ! F.. Cox, I don't need fixed news or babble from MSN, if I see something interesting, I can view for free on the computer. By the way, they charge Nevadans the highest cable and internet rate in the country !
They all basically suck, who's kidding who here?
The problem is none of these people offer any sort of customer choice. All of them are about fitting you into their choices. Nobody needs even 40 channels of TV. I bet most of us, if given a choice, would not need more than 20, so why are we paying for hundreds we never watch? why do I have to pay for 40 music channels? 12 spanish channels? shopping? and endless sports I never watch?
Bottom line is everything is going internet (including TV). So one best pick a good internet provider. With that said one is kidding themselves if they think an alternative to Cox Internet exist in LV.
Every Cox customer should switch to a dish provider plus a new internet service, Cox stands for CROOKS. Break the monopoly and vote out any politician that grants them increases for there poor sevvice and no customer service. Wake up Clark County they have a licence to pick your pocket. Wake up politicians and commities you are also to blame for this rip off so called company. What else are you going to sell them for 1 dollar, more land an another building now look what you got in return. NOTHING!!!! BYE, BYE to all you fools.
I find it ironic that so many posts call Cox a monopoly, and then in the next sentence proclaim how they are switching to dish for TV or Clear for Internet or cellular for phone (among the many other suggestions for alternatives to Cox services). That doesn't sound like much of a monopoly to me...
That's why I love my direct Tv, I hate cox cable allmost as much as I hate sprint...lol Direct tv is cheaper..
Would love to get direct or dishnetowrk, but we live in a strict HOA, and we can't have dishes mounted. We can only have tripods, and that will work only if your patio faces south. Mine does not, I am S.O.L. Cox is terrible, their customer service is the worse, it seems like you need to have an education in "dumb" to work there. Every person gives different prices. And what cable company charges extra to have channels like discovery, foodnetwork, etc? Cox does! comcast and rcn please come to Vegas soon!
