UFC to offer PPV events in Spanish

Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 | 12:18 p.m.

In its latest efforts to expand the UFC brand and the sport of mixed martial arts, the UFC has announced it is planning to broadcast entire pay-per-view events in Spanish. The first edition of the Spanish broadcasts will be UFC 111 on March 27.

"For our fans who want to watch and listen to our UFC events in Spanish, we are now creating a show just for them," UFC president Dana White said in a statement.

The Spanish broadcast will include all of the same elements as the English version, including the pre-produced segments, fighter interviews and play-by-play commentating from announcers Troy Santiago and Victor Davila.

The two announcers are already known by Spanish-speaking fans because of their involvement with the program "El Octagono Del UFC," which premiered in 2008 on Galavision.

According to UFC officials, DirecTV, iNDemand, DISH Network and Avail-TVN PPV carriers in the United States already are signed on to provide the Spanish language feed.

UFC 111 features two championship fights from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will defend his title against top contender Dan Hardy. Heavyweights Frank Mir and Shane Carwin will meet for the interim heavyweight title.

Brock Lesnar retires after first-round TKO defeat against Alistair Overeem

UFC 141 Alistair Overeem called it his "liver kick". Brock Lesnar just knew it hurt. Overeem sent Lesnar into retirement when he fired his foot into Lesnar's stomach midway through the first round of their heavyweight title eliminator bout. Lesnar crouched in pain after the strike and eventually fell to the mat. Overeem rushed in and threw a few more strikes, but Lesnar had nothing left. The referee pulled Overeem off to officialy give him the next shot at champion Junior dos Santos. In the co-main event, Nate Diaz upset Donald Cerrone after a week full of tempers flaring between the two lightweights.
