Referee, judges chosen for UFC 125

Referee Yves Lavigne was selected Monday by the Nevada State Athletic Commission to referee Saturday’s lightweight championship match between Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar in UFC 125 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The commission also selected judges Patricia Morse-Jarman, Marcos Rosales and Glenn Trowbridge to score the fight.

Edgar (13-1) has only been defeated once in his UFC career — against the unbeaten Maynard (11-0).

Also Monday, the commission granted licenses to three fighters scheduled to appear on the card.

Marcus Davis, Mike Brown and Antonio McKee were licensed in a process required by the commission for fighters over the age of 35. The process includes a physical.

“I’d love the opportunity to continue to compete in the sport of mixed martial arts,” said the 37-year-old Davis (22-7), who will fight Jeremy Stephens at UFC 125 in a 155-pound match.

“Although I’m over the age of 35, I feel I can hang with these youngsters.”

Brown, a 35-year-old featherweight with a 24-6 record, will fight Diego Nunes. The 40-year-old McKee (25-3-2) will take on Jacob Volkmann.

Nick Diaz fails to back up years worth of talk

UFC 158 A welterweight title fight that felt incredibly different wound up remarkably the same. Georges St. Pierre manhandled nemesis Nick Diaz with his wrestling. St. Pierre won every round on every judges' scorecard in Montreal for his sixth straight unanimous-decision victory. Diaz had preached his superiority over St. Pierre for years, but when he finally got his chance, he looked as helpless as all the other challengers to the 170-pound division's throne in the last six years. St. Pierre's consistency continued to amaze. Now it's on to Johny Hendricks, who defeated Carlos Condit in the evening's co-main event. Could he be the one to finally threaten St. Pierre?
