Superstar entertainer Barry Manilow will host the 53 2011 Miss America Pageant contestants in a unique performance of his headliner show at the Paris. The award-winning singer-songwriter will welcome them to Las Vegas the day after their Jan. 6 official arrival and rose ceremony with Mayor Oscar Goodman. Barry, nominated this week for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, also will have the ladies onstage for a special serenade.
Incidentally, Barry had to postpone his Valentine’s Day weekend performances at the Paris because of the Grammy nod, as he’ll be appearing on the 53rd annual CBS telecast Feb. 13. Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002, Barry won Grammy Awards in 1976 and 1979.
The Miss America Pageant contestants have two other appointments at the Paris while in town. On Jan. 9, they’ll all go to the top of the Eiffel Tower attraction, and then Jan. 14, they take part in the return of the traditional “Show Us Your Shoes” parade with reigning Miss America Caressa Cameron, Miss America’s outstanding teen contestants and 43 former Miss Americas who will appear on the ABC telecast Jan. 15.
Wicked whispers & racy rumors
I’m reliably hearing that we can expect a stunning and massive announcement early next week about a $1 million commitment from a Strip headliner to two of our local charitable efforts. I’m also told that a local indie hotel owner operator hasn’t just purchased one more casino and a troubled apartment complex, but also is in negotiations for two more hotels as proof of his belief that Las Vegas has bounced off its bottom in the economic downturn. He’s betting the old glory days will return even bigger within five to10 years! Luxor and Mindfreak star Criss Angel is starting a Magic Jam charity organization to help underprivileged at-risk Las Vegas children learn magic.
*The larger-than-life nightclubs we have in Las Vegas have prompted the Nightclub & Bar Awards for 2011 to put our venues into their own category so that other U.S. cities can get recognition for their clubs and bars. Otherwise, Vegas would walk away with everything! The publishers of Nightclub & Bar Magazine also have introduced a dayclub category because of the sudden slew of daylight party venues. The 23 winners will be named in the March issue in conjunction with the Nightclub & Bar Trade Show and Convention here in March.
*The new wine bar and restaurant La Cave with its more than 250 labels and 35 poured by the glass has opened at the Wynn. Star Chef Hubert Keller’s new Fleur restaurant of all-American tapas-sized servings is now open for dinner at Mandalay Bay.
Tonight’s tips
Four-time Grammy-winning R&B group Boyz II Men mark their first-ever extended engagement on The Strip with a special media holiday show at the Flamingo Showroom. Approaching their 10th anniversary, Boyz II Men are there until Donny & Marie Osmond return from their Broadway holiday show Jan. 18. Chelsea Lately regular Ben Gelb is the standup comedy headliner at The Playboy Comedy Club in the Palms through Saturday.
Tomorrow’s teases
We’ll have the details of the America’s Party 2011 entertainment extravaganza and fireworks by Grucci to ring in the New Year. Already planned for New Year’s Eve on The Strip is the pyrotechnic display to be launched from seven rooftop locations at MGM Grand, Aria, Planet Hollywood, Caesars Palace, Treasure Island, The Venetian and Stratosphere. If I clear my computer with the backlog piled up as a result of The Cosmopolitan soft opening, I’ll also write my exclusive Paris Hilton interview and reveal how she seduced me into appearing in the filming of her new reality TV series The World According to Paris filmed here this week for Oxygen.
