LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Legalizing online poker of no help to average Nevadans

If Internet poker were to be legalized, what exactly would be the benefit to the citizens of Nevada? We know it would be a bonanza for the corporate bank accounts of the casino corporations and CEOs, but how many actual jobs would it produce in Nevada, if any?

Computer servers would control the games. How do we know that in order to inflate the bottom line even more for the casinos, all the servers and customer service support people won’t be in India or Macau, where labor is cheaper?

This proposal in Congress would be a win for corporations but zero for the unemployed in Nevada.

Such legislation would further reduce tourism in Nevada because it would drain gamblers’ bankrolls for trips here. Legalization of Internet poker would be the worst thing to happen to the citizens of Nevada — unless the gaming tax were raised to a rate comparable to rates in the rest of the country and the world.
