HS BASKETBALL:

Cimarron posts victory despite only scoring 40 points

Team page

The Cimarron-Memorial High basketball team didn’t earn any style points Friday night in a 40-38 victory against visiting San Fernando Community Charter of California.

“It was an ugly one,” Cimarron coach Steve Boyack said. “Neither of us could score much, but we played good defense.”

Cimarron trailed 20-16 at halftime but connected on a trio of 3-pointers to open the second half and never trailed the remainder of the game.

Christian Brown led Cimarron with 11 points and Mussie Gerbremeskel had 10. Last week, Cimarron (2-0) opened with a 68-60 victory against Green Valley High.

“I felt we played a lot better last week,” Boyack said. “We missed a lot of put-backs and layups tonight.”

Also, point guard Rico Garrett injured his shoulder and is expected to miss three weeks. That’s a big blow when you considered Cimarron opens Northwest Division play Monday against Shadow Ridge.

“It’s going to be tough,” Boyack said of dealing with the loss of Garrett.
