Sen. Bob Coffin, D-Las Vegas, listens to a hearing Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at the Legislature in Carson City.

Former state Sen. Bob Coffin announced today he will run for the Las Vegas City Council seat to be vacated next year by Gary Reese, who is term-limited.

“I’m excited about the opportunity, given the knowledge I’ve accumulated during my time in public service,” Coffin said in a press release. “The City of Las Vegas is at a crucial time in its history, and I know my experience on the Senate and Assembly money committees could prove valuable in protecting city taxpayer dollars.”

Coffin, who lives in the John S. Park Historic District, one block off Las Vegas Boulevard near Charleston Boulevard, served in the Legislature from 1982 through 2010, both as an assemblyman and senator.

In his press release, Coffin touts his record of independence in the Legislature, where he sometimes came to loggerheads with both fellow Democrats and Republicans. He cites his vote against a 300 percent increase in legislative pensions in 1989.
