LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

We need to be taking care of our citizens first

Can anyone explain why the government cannot afford to extend benefits for Americans who had money deducted from their paychecks to pay for unemployment, but we have money to give to countries like Pakistan where they train terrorists to kill Americans?

Congress needs to stop trying to buy friendships under the guise of foreign aid with money we do not have. We are broke and need to take care of Americans first. America can no longer afford to give money away.

  1. I really wish Americans would stop asking questions like Carolyn Boyle asked in her letter. The sad truth is that Congress allocates spending on many more things than it has the revenue to pay for. Those in Congress (both R's and D's) don't have the guts to tell the American people that 'we can't have it all'. Either taxes have to go way way up on everyone, alot of spending has to be cut or we need to do a combination of both - and ALL of it will be very painful. My advice to Carolyn and everyone else: If you don't like the wars and aid to Pakistan, advocate for Cogressional Term Limits and vote your friendly Senator and Representative out of office the next chance you get. The same advice goes for people who believe the opposite. The men and Women we have in Congress are not doing the tough work that needs to be done. We need to fire them.

  2. Carolyn, I doubt that anyone can properly answer your question. Western governments want to be seen as generous, so they give a small percentage of their GDP to third world countries. Presumably it costs too much to be generous with their own citizens. I don't buy the arguments that freer trade will make us rich. In my opinion free trade just operates to lose our jobs and factories over time to foreign countries.
However, corporate America and the rich want free trade because it increases their personal profits, so we are likely stuck with it, as virtually all politicians want to keep corporate America happy. And corporate America is thriving at the same time that ordinary Americans are struggling.
We had better get used to reading more and more stories like in yesterday's Sun by Rodger Jacobs on the plight of the near-homeless. Our politicians are not concerned with anyone but themselves and the rich, I'm afraid.

  3. fosimmons - "Yea ... and that 52 million in that brief case of the brother of Karzi .... thanks Wiki Leaks for that tidbit"

Include the billions that disappeared from an Iraqi loading area. People are getting extremely wealthy off these wars. Money that will never be accounted for is ending up in the hands of who knows.

Maybe when we get struck by another well funded attack some Americans will ask who is getting those tax dollars.

  4. Chuckles - "Unemployment checks average about $320/week"

Probably true, but you left off another piece of information. WHERE ARE THE JOBS? For every job available 5 to 6 people apply. The jobs simply don't exist because many were outsourced to other countries. I know for a fact computer call centers are operating out of Colombia, India, Brazil, and that is just a minor part of our loss.

  5. Actually Americans are doing a pretty bang up job killing other Americans, but outsourcing seems to be all the rage these days. We don't need pakis to kill americans when we are already killing each other like crazy. The facts on the ground are that China is cozying up to the Pakis, even getting into bed with them and instead of wine and chocolates these rascallians are bringing along 2 brand new nuclear power plants. Not one but 2. How are we going to compete with that kind of seduction?
Well, we will start by building 2 Dams,(two) so there!!! This will win the hearts of Pakis, and soon the U.S. can go home to our own crumbling nation.
We can't afford to do anything in this country, don't you see?
Stop complaining about unemployment benefits, the crumbling infrastructure, poverty etc.
Get used to it. It won't be going away.
Just bask in the glory that your tax dollars are going to appease Pakis, cause they really don't trust us, I don't see why.
Although it will never happen, cause he's not aipac certified, if you want change consider voting for a strict constructionist, Dr. Ron Paul for president. He will close that gap.
