Fire location
Fire officials said two children were taken to University Medical Center this morning after a small electric stove caught fire at an apartment while the children were home alone.
Las Vegas Fire and Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said firefighters responded at 8:35 a.m. to a fire at the Shenandoah Square apartment complex in the 2900 block of Marlin Avenue, near Stewart Avenue and 28th Street.
A 9-year-old suffered minor burns on the hands and a 2-year-old suffered from smoke inhalation, Szymanski said.
Fire officials said it appears items on a stove caught fire when the power was turned on while the residents were moving into the apartment. The children left the apartment and went to a neighbor for help, officials said.
Metro Police and Child Protective Services were notified because the two children were left home alone. Officials said the mother had taken another sibling to school a few blocks away.
Fire investigators ruled the fire accidental. It caused about $500 in damage to the stove.

Metro only investigates young children being left home alone only after something happens. When I called them several yrs ago about a 5 yr old being left home alone while the child's parents worked, they stated that there were no laws in this state against leaving small children home alone unsupervised. " is the child in any danger? " was all that was asked. I told them that the child had the front door wide open and anyone off the street could just walk in and harm the child. They told me that unless something happened, there was nothing that they could do. Unbelievable!
Oh come on! Why couldn't this mother put the two other children in the car while taking another one to school? STOP REPRODUCING!
My 14 month old daughter is obsessed with our door knob. She can reach it, but she cannot turn it... YET! She's not tall enough... YET! We always keep our door locked, but once she's tall enough to actuall turn that knob, she will be tall enough to unlock the door as well. You need to keep BOTH eyes on your child(ren) at ALL times!
Who leaves a 9 year old home alone to watch a two year old? Bunch of dumb idiot parents.
9 and 2 left alone? Throw the parents in jail now, send the kids to other, more reliable, family members.
You people are drastically overconfident about your judgments of others.
Caveman: Yes we are. Unless you think a child getting burned is "normal". At some point in time common sense needs to kick in, hence our judgement of others.
This had a positive outcome, the two children are alive. What if the children did not get out and were consumed by the fire. Would you be saying the same thing Caveman?
Spend a few days in the burn unit at UMC and you will see that it is more common than you think and for much worse parenting than what is stated in this article. You do not know these parents or their complete situation. However regardless of your ignorance you are willing to judge them. Remember judgements prevent us from seeing the good that lies beyond appearances.
Fedup: Perhaps the parents have taught the 9 year old what to do in case of a fire. You think of that? Maybe it is what saved them. Think about everything before you speak out against others.
@Fedup remember this post?
Are you God as to judge? Because the Bible, the one you keep quoting from also states that God is the judge, not any humans.
Ecclesiastes 3:17
I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.
You my friend have no right to judge anyone, only God. So you yourself are a sinner. Are you going to repent?
Hmm ... who posted that?
I am not judging anyone Caveman, the parents made the decision to leave their children home alone, not me. Where did you see me judge anyone in my post? All I said is would you be singing a different tune if these children died in the fire...where is that judging?
also @ Caveman, if the mother was taking another child to school why not pack up the other two children and take them with her? That's what any responsible parent would do. Wouldn't they?
