A convicted felon is facing attempted murder and battery charges after he allegedly held his girlfriend against her will in Pahrump for part of three days before shooting himself twice.

Nye County sheriff's deputies responded about 3 p.m. Saturday to a home at 1070 W. Ricksue after receiving a report that a man with a gun had shot himself. The caller reported she was the ex-girlfriend of Burniss Eugene Yarbrough, 52, and had been held for several days before Yarbrough shot himself.

Authorities allege Yarbrough had gone to the house on Thursday with the intent of killing his ex-girlfriend and himself. He had put the gun to the woman's head numerous times and pulled the trigger, but either the gun had a malfunction or wasn't loaded, authorities said.

After days of repeatedly beating the woman, Yarbrough pulled out the gun Saturday afternoon and shot himself in the head. As the woman then ran from the house, Yarbrough shot himself a second time, in the chest.

Yarbrough is being treated for his injuries at University Medical Center in Las Vegas. After his release from UMC, he will face charges of false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, domestic battery, discharging a firearm in a structure, attempted murder and ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

Authorities are continuing an investigation into the shooting. Yarbrough will be booked into the Nye County Detention Center.
