Nick Diaz, K.J. Noons rematch scheduled for Oct. 9

Strikeforce welterweight championship bout to headline fall card in San Jose

A welterweight championship bout between Nick Diaz and K.J. Noons will headline a previously announced Strikeforce event on Oct. 9 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

The event will be co-headlined by the women's welterweight championship fight between Sarah Kaufman and Marloes Coenen.

Noons (10-2) defeated Diaz (22-7) in a November 2007 meeting under the now defunct EliteXC promotion.

In that fight, Noons opened up several cuts on Diaz's face early, forcing a cage-side physician to wave off the action at the end of the first round.

The news of the rematch comes just days after Noons (10-2) posted a second-round TKO win over Jorge Gurgel at the Strikeforce: Houston event on Aug. 21.

It was his second win under the Strikeforce banner, and the 27-year-old Noons continues to have plenty of options when it comes to his fighting career.

In addition to potential title runs in the Strikeforce 155- and 170-pound divisions, Noons also holds a professional boxing record of 11-2. His last appearance in the ring was in October, when he scored a unanimous-decision win in a six-round bout.

Diaz will be coming off a three-month suspension handed down to him by the Tennessee Athletic Commission for his role in a post-fight brawl that took place at the Strikeforce: Nashville event in April.

The defending champ has strung together seven straight wins since the loss to Noons.

The Strikeforce event will air on Showtime. Tickets will be made available to the general public Saturday, Aug. 28.
