Paul Maidman
Miranda Dalton
A judge handed down a maximum sentence Monday to a woman convicted in a drunken driving crash that killed a 29-year-old man.
Miranda Dalton, who was 28 at the time of the April crash, was sentenced by District Court Judge Jennifer Togliatti to eight to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay $11,581 in restitution. Dalton will get credit for the 107 days she has served in jail.
Maidman's family and the district attorney's office had requested the sentence, which is the maximum under state law.
On April 9, Dalton rear-ended Paul Maidman's car at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Soaring Gulls Drive, killing him.
Authorities said Dalton admitted to drinking at a bar that night before driving home. A breath test conducted shortly after the wreck showed an alcohol level more than double the legal limit of .08.
According to the arrest report, Maidman's gold 2003 Buick Century was struck from behind. He died from his injuries at University Medical Center.
Maidman's sister, Dawn Buist of Las Vegas, said family and friends are "thrilled" with the sentence given to Dalton. About 50 to 60 family members and friends of Maidman attended the sentencing Monday as part of "Team Paul" to demand justice, she said.
"We're very satisfied," Buist said. "That's all we could have asked for."

She deserves the whole 20 years in jail, not just 8-20. According to another newspaper she was convicted of DUI back in 2001 as well.
BYE BYE SEE YA! Miranda obviously you arent smart enough to learn your lesson the first time you screw up. This time your ignorance cost someone else their life, not to mention the destruction to this poor guys family.
Hi Seriously, this story contains previous details in the case, such as information about the 2001 conviction.

Isn't she going to plead the "too pretty to be in prison" thing?
Thank You Judge Jennifer Togliatti, finally more than a slap on the wrist (fines) for a crime that should be charged as attempted murder when BAC is that high.
Is she allowed conjugal visits?
8 to 20 is max for what exactly, dosen't even say what the actual charge she was convicted on was, other than involved in a fatal dui crash, isn'nt this a wide range and degree of eventual charges to be convicted on,how would I know the severity of the punishment if I don't even know what the charge she was convicted of was?
IMO the sentence is not enough but as a Canadian snowbird I will say that up here she would get maybe 20 MONTHS and it would be house arrest. We can learn a lot from U.S. system.
kunt-akente - In case you didnt notice in my post I didnt say anything about 20 years in prison "satisfying me" as you incorrectly put it. I said that she "deserved" 20 years(which is the max for what she was convicted of) and NOT 8-20, which will no doubtedly be 8 years or less with good behavior. IMO if our sentences were much more harsh, lets say 20-life it would "satisfy me" for her to serve MUCH more time.
Also, theres no need to point out the destruction that she did to this poor guy and his friends/family to me. Again, if you read my post you would have realized that I understood that already. Please try to pay attention.
Thanks for playing.
now i see why nevada is ranked high "lack of education". you all make conclusions on this person who none of you all really know but how many of you are making efforts to stop the killing of americans not to mention the corruption in gov't...haven't you all have something better to do? like get a job? contribute to society? nevada is a simple uneducated state, not to mention lousy servers!!
How do you kill someone by rear ending the car?
US made cars have a terrible failure rate of front seats from rear end forces.
If the seat did not fail this person would be alive.
Just because the car was hit, in this case, by a drunk driver was a coincidence, because a non drunk driver could have rear ended the car just as well and had the seat fail.
Bob635, really? Seats? HELLO, it's not a "coincidence" that a drunk rearended and killed a human being. DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE, DRIVING IMPAIRED is what caused this tragedy, not seats.
