Water bottles surround the mic where beer cans might typically rest; the audience sits circling the stage instead of huddling around a bar. Alexanders Architects, a local six-piece averaging 18 in age, ends its set to applause from its underage fans. Welcome to the first installment of Clark County’s newest Winchester Cultural Center concert series, Young Originals. “We have great bands in this town, and [we want] to put them in a venue that really shows them off,” says series founder Patrick Gaffey. “This won’t appeal to people going out for a night of drinking; we’re appealing to people who love music.” Though Saturday’s turnout is modest, Jason Aragon, bassist for closing act I’m the Rabbit, seems pleased with the result. “It was one of the most fun shows I’ve ever played,” he says. “The start time, no smoking, sound, lighting—everything about it.” Gaffey hopes to run the series once a month, with a hiatus planned for September.
