Approximate area of crash

The Utah Highway Patrol says a bus that left Las Vegas carrying Japanese tourists veered into the median of a Utah interstate and rolled, killing three passengers.

Patrol spokesman Cameron Roden says several passengers were ejected from the bus, which was traveling from Las Vegas to Bryce Canyon National Park on Monday at about 6:40 p.m. Las Vegas time when it crashed on Interstate 15 about five miles north of Cedar City.

Officials say 12 other people were taken to hospitals in Cedar City and other places, including some with critical injuries.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported 14 tourists from Japan were passengers on the bus. The victims hadn't been identified early Tuesday morning, Roden said.

Roden said investigators want to ask the driver what caused him to swerve.

Trooper James Keller tells the St. George Spectrum at least two passengers were ejected from the van-sized bus, and one passenger trapped inside was killed.

The crash location is about 180 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
