OAKLAND, Calif. — Every fighter on the UFC 117 card but one made weight Friday at the Oracle Arena.

Unsurprisingly, the one who missed the mark was Thiago Alves.

Alves, who has a history of cutting it close when it comes to making weight, came in half a pound over the 171-limit for his fight against Jon Fitch and was given two hours to cut.

Main event fighters Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva both had no trouble making weight for their middleweight title fight.

Sonnen tipped the scales at 185 and Silva at 184.5. Each fighter received a mix of boos and cheers as his name was announced.

During the usual weigh-in stare-down, Silva refused to look at Sonnen and turned his gaze nonchalantly over his other shoulder.

In his final words to the fans before Saturday's fight, Sonnen invited them to celebrate the end of Silva's career.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the pre-party of Anderson Silva's retirement," Sonnen said.

Silva kept his remarks short, thanking the crowd for turning up and promising to give his best effort.

"Just want to thank everybody for coming out," said Silva through his interpreter Ed Soares. "I'm constantly trying to improve."

UFC 158
Nick Diaz fails to back up years worth of talk

UFC 158 A welterweight title fight that felt incredibly different wound up remarkably the same. Georges St. Pierre manhandled nemesis Nick Diaz with his wrestling. St. Pierre won every round on every judges' scorecard in Montreal for his sixth straight unanimous-decision victory. Diaz had preached his superiority over St. Pierre for years, but when he finally got his chance, he looked as helpless as all the other challengers to the 170-pound division's throne in the last six years. St. Pierre's consistency continued to amaze. Now it's on to Johny Hendricks, who defeated Carlos Condit in the evening's co-main event. Could he be the one to finally threaten St. Pierre?
