Mortar rounds found
Residents cleaning a shed behind their home in West Las Vegas found two mortar rounds Sunday afternoon, both of which were turned over to Nellis Air Force Base officials.
Metro Police responded at 1:46 p.m. to the home at 1114 Sharon Road, near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Washington Avenue, after residents found what they described as two military-type missiles in a shed. The Las Vegas Fire and Rescue bomb squad also responded to the home.
Fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said Nellis Air Force Base was notified after the items were determined to be military in nature. The Nellis bomb squad took possession of the mortar rounds for the residents and will dispose of them.
Szymanski said the items were determined to be "very old" illumination mortar rounds, which he described as "a very large flare that is shot into the air to light up the area at night."
"Many times when people are cleaning out sheds, garages, or storage lockers (many times because of a deceased relative) old wartime or military items are found, which usually turn out to be souvenirs," Szymanski said in a statement.
He said residents are encouraged to call authorities before handling any such type of device that isn't familiar.
