Top Nevada Republican candidates taking aim at Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid largely agreed on the issues Friday night during a debate sponsored by a tea party-affiliated group.
GOP front-runners Sue Lowden, Danny Tarkanian and Sharron Angle joined three other candidates in pledging to fight for tax cuts and less spending and against the health care reform law if elected.
One of the few clashes occurred when Tarkanian challenged Lowden's claim that she had fought pork projects when she was a state senator.
"Her record is replete with pork," Tarkanian said.
"I don't know what he's talking about. I voted against pork," she replied.
Lowden, a former state GOP chairwoman, enjoys a double-digit lead in the polls over both Tarkanian and Angle. All three candidates currently lead Reid in the polls.
Gov. Jim Gibbons, his top challenger Brian Sandoval and Mike Montandon also shared mostly similar views on the issues during their debate.
One of the few clashes occurred when Sandoval criticized Gibbons for submitting a budget earlier this year containing over $200 million in tax increases.
Gibbons countered with criticism of Sandoval's own budget for dealing with the state's most recent budget shortfall.
"Brian Sandoval, you were the first to submit a budget that didn't work, that did not balance and had the wrong numbers," Gibbons said.
Sandoval, a former federal judge, currently leads the first-term governor in the polls.
About 400 people turned out for the event that was sponsored by Action is Brewing, which is aligned with the tea party movement.
Candidates fielded questions from conservative bloggers and were allowed to address each other.
Candidates in both races also supported the Arizona bill signed into law Friday that supporters said would take handcuffs off police in dealing with illegal immigration in the state.

...hey, let's just listen to Palin and the failed GOP, and go back to cut taxes / cut govt that we tried for the 3 decades of the Reagan/Bush era. In fact, let's get ANOTHER big tax cut to the wealthiest as we did in 1981 and 2001.
I mean, that worked SO well to deliver trickle down prosperity. Almost nobody is unemployed now. And the banks and health insurers, heck - they POLICED THEMSELVES!!! Get government out of the WAY by golly!
...did you know most teabaggers think Hitler was a socialist?
...can you spell i-g-n-o-r-a-n-t?
Abe Lincoln would have said;
"You can fool some of the people, ALL of the time"... ;^)
Is there anybody with a brain in your state? TAx cuts? No to Rory, Gibbons, Sandoval, Lowden, Harry. My God what a bunch of baboons. Oops sorry baboons your species is smarter than those I have mentioned.
Lowden:
She comes across as a Reid clone. Lots of promising statements full of HOPE. Nothing substantive. No attachment to reality.
Furthermore, what is up with her always having her nose elevated into the air? Why must we always be looking up her nostrils? Is it a sign of superiority; her being better than any of us? Is it due to a deviated septum? And, what could have caused it?
Tarkanian:
He appears to be more tethered to reality. But then, he wants atomic waste to be taken to Yucca Mountain for reprocessing. Meaning it has to be hauled through our cities. Something we've been fighting against all along. Does he really want that stuff going through Reno, Fallon/Carson, Yerington, Hawthorne, Mina, Tonopah, Goldfield and Beatty on its way from WA state? Or, through Wendover/Elko or Ely, Eureaka Austin, etc., and also through Las Vegas from other points across the country?
Why can't this stuff be reprocessed where its at? This plan of his only shows he hasn't been paying attention.
Then there is vote NO on everything Angle.
Thus, I'm a Republican without a candidate for Senate.
The fact of the matter is that lower taxes = more growth. You can even ask President Obama's economic advisor Christine Romer about that fact.
Certainly there is no magic bullet. I will admit that lowering taxes is but one part of a successful economic environment, but it is scary to think that people believe that higher taxes (for others no doubt) automatically means greater prosperity. The evidence says otherwise.
I still think that Sandoval is a fantastic candidate. Just look at the disaster that is Clark County. That is what we have to look forward to if Reid is the next governor. And, let's face it, it will either be Reid or Sandoval.
We will get higher taxes simply to feed crazy wages and benefits for the people who elected Reid. It will be the worst of both worlds: higher taxes and unwise spending. The connected will have more; the rest of us will have less. As Governor Christie in NJ says, there will be two classes of people: those with outrageous wages and benefits and those that pay for them.
@mgkrebsii: Your dismay is well-founded--only second and third tier GOP candidates emerged in this senate race. Chachas sounds like the brightest bulb, but he is a completely unknown, politically naive carpetbagger. Because of Steele, national fundraising has dried up, so the expected windfall to counter Reid's millions on the airwaves might not materialize. Lowden really does have an air of entitlement that might not play well in the the general election.
The only true Conservative running for Senate is Danny Tarkanian. The 3rd Congressional choice for a true Conservative is Brad Leutwyler. These men both are against the Progressive Movement and their love of Income Taxes. Progressives promised it would never go over 7%, they lied. The poor pay 10%. Both Candidates support the Fair Tax and that proves they are not Progressives. To learn about the Virtues of the Fair Tax (HR 25 and S.296 ) Check out www.fairtax.org
It takes skill to get something done or undone in politics. Just because they want to change something does not mean they can do it. Even Republican analysts are saying that they won't reclaim the Senate or the House. Rupert Murdock of Fox is now raining in some of the shenanigans of Hannity, who was melding his show, with GOP fundraising and Tbag activism. (search engine "Hannity Cincinnati Appearance") With Fox being neutered, the Republicans are going to be lucky to pick up 4 Senate seats.
Reg373, hate to tell you but CLINTON passed the CRA in '95 and CLINTON repealed a banking protection law that had been in place since about 1932, one caused the bank problems and the other the housing bubble, but blame it on Bush.
These Republican candidates have been anointed by God/Yahweh/Lord-Jesus to be our theocratic rulers. These white Christian Aryan brotherhood of Tea Party patriot elderly Social Security/Medicare/VA beneficiaries are doing God's work in presenting a forum for the anointed ones in their election battle against the islamo-communistio-liberals.
"The fact of the matter is that lower taxes = more growth."
In what universe? The greatest period of economic growth in our nation's history was also the period with the highest marginal tax rates.
Nevada has the lowest taxes on business of any state in the country. Why don't we have the most growth? Where are all the new businesses flocking to our state?
That is not to say that higher taxes mean prosperity, but to say that lower taxes do is absurd. Economic growth is a product of a number of things, and tax rates are not nearly the most important. Infrastructure and the availability of an educated workforce have far more to do with growth than tax rates. Those two things are what made our nation so prosperous during the post-WWII era and the our crumbling infrastructure and sub-standard educational systems are the largest reason why our economy is in decline, especially relative to those countries that have made substantial investments in something other than their militaries over the last 40 years.
------------------------------------------------------
Anybody have any idea of what it is that Danny Tarkanian has ever done to qualify himself for the US Senate? I mean besides play basketball.
Why do you guys blame each other? Yeah tea party people are smarter than everyone else, okay, like I'll beleive that. Sound like that superiority complex again. You guys dont get it. These candidates, including the incumbents, are all about playing the same games. We need to rid our system of the dependencies on campaign finance and lobbying, until then everything will continue to be complicated and logic will not prevail.
Case in point. 20 of the last 29 years have had conservative presidents, yet government and spending has continued to grow. I am not blaming them, because they are just as much to blame as the democrats.
What it is is the dependencies on campaign finance and lobbying. These (I dont even know what to call 'em) play games so they can continue to be needed, so that they can raise funds. Until we get someone that is brave enough to stand up to these dependencies, things will continue to get worse, even if the jobs come back.
What is their position on 1070 in AZ? Do they support a similar law in Nevada?
The "Ownership Society" of Bush pushed houses to unqualified people. The CRA only effected one major bank that was bailed out. So lake las Vegas, all these empty high end condos in NV and Fl, that is because of the CRA?
Turn off Hannity and Beck, even Rupert Murdock thinks they are a couple of jokes, that's why he pulled the plug on the Cincinnati T Bag Convention featuring Hannity.
"Her record is replete with pork," Tarkanian said.
"I don't know what he's talking about. I voted against pork," she (Lowden) replied.
******
Of course she voted against pork. She voted for chickens.
Everybody knows that members of the Tea Party are highly intelligent, and better looking, and are very affluent. Hey, they sound like a very elitist group.
This is why I will not associate with them. Who wants to congregate with a bunch of elitists?
I guess all the misspellings were the Idiot Savants on there way to the Mensa meeting.
I know my IQ rises every time I watch Glenn Beck.
I have been told that he is the sharpest tool in the drawer. Oh No! I think I misheard, someone
just called him a Tool!
As long as the dialogue is driven by the likes of Beck, Bachman, and Palin, Tea Partiers will always be a laughing stock. The only way they can gain credibility is at the ballot box.
If they have gains this year, I fear that it will be short-lived. Their ideas are anachronistic. That is a $2 word meaning ol' fashioned.
So, unless they can find 'nother Reagan(positive & optimistic) there cause is sadly lost.
Americans are a positive people, and the TeePeeRs
are very negative and pessimistic. They are also quite whiny. They are very good at complaining!
These are not selling points.
So, unless they can become more positive, they will not be a successful movement.
I hear our dear old dogg laughing and making fun of the Tea Party supporters, but I am unable to hear Harry Reid laughing at present.
I think being down 10 percentage points in the polls is no laughing matter.
We are closing in on six months before the midterm election which will send Harry back to Washington or back to Searchlight.
Harry Reid is said to have a campaign war chest of 25 million dollars to spend in his attempt to get reelected.
Sue Lowden says that if Harry Reid spends the 25 million dollars in Nevada during the general election, it would give Nevada "the best stimulus" Harry has provided yet.
And that aint no chicken feed...
I have been asking and asking for answers to who is qualified and actually capable of being better than Harry Reid.
It appears the Republicans have answered and failed big time.
Looks like the best Republicans are still not better than Reid and have no chance of being nominated. The worst will get the nomination and possibly win over Harry, but they are obviously not any better and will be a big loss for Nevada.
I just watched a Republican do more for the working poor and women in her state than any other politician ever by signing the 1070 in to Law in AZ. Every other "career politician" would not do a thing, as wages and workers rights were disgraced and watched women being pummled in this state because of the atmosphere and working conditions caused by the abundance of illegal workers to exploit and no one would reign in the cheap labor.
The Democrates can kiss my vote good bye forever, they have shown their true intentions through this one issue.
Harry Reid I intend to make a donation to your Challenger in the name of the working poor and women in your state you coward and trader to everything the Democrats used to stand for.
Wow! Reid trails ALL THREE Republicant Senatorial candidates in the polls. Guess it's a done deal, wrap it up. Nevada's sending another Republicant doofus to Washington in November to join up with that conservative genius Ensign. Thank you Nevada! You're Number 1!
I would also like more info on our canidates as I will never vote for Harry Reid! I have never been to a tea Party event but definitly support the message which is to quit spending money the country doesnt have thats not racist or mean or stupid we need jobs you cant eat healthcare or pay for an insurance policy if you dont have a job!! big or small business aren't going hire and make money if the goverment is going to take it all in taxes.
Why is everyone so upset about the new immigration Law? If your legal to be in this counrty then you should be proud to show it, its not a civil rights issue to be asked for your ID you have to show more Id to get on an airplane no ones screaming at the TSA give me a break people our country cant find jobs for its citizens let alone thousands of illegals. Did everyone see the report on how many americans actually paid federal taxes this year? 53% is all 47% got back everything they paid a flat tax is the only way to level the playing field make everyone pay the same percentage based on there income no more deductions no more tax hype and confusion. Then Turn the IRS buildings into VA hospitals!
And remember prostituion is the oldest profession republican or democrat the human race has been screwing each other for money since the beginning of time its time we stop!
Harry Reid is our Senior Senator from Nevada (and I'm not even going to say anything about comparing Harry's record of service against the Republican Junior Senator from Nevada who is mired in criminal controversy and has so very little for Nevadans)! Harry Reid has honored all of Nevada by being selected to also serve as the U. S. Senate Majority Leader - this is a big deal folks, and it put Nevada on the national map politically and is reason enough to re-elect Harry!
Harry is clearly the best qualified and has done more for Nevadans than all of these Repubicans combined too! Why would anyone in their right mind want to replace a senior Senator and the U. S. Senate Majority Leader with an freshman amatuer? It just doesn't make even basic common sense!
All of these polls are premature - until we get through the Primary, these silly polls are of value only to the media folks!
From the article: "... About 400 people turned out for the event that was sponsored by Action is Brewing, which is aligned with the tea party movement. ..."

When did these Teatards change their name?
They used to be called "Anger Is Brewing."
