Two-day-old boy left at fire station under Safe Haven law

A two-day-old boy was dropped off at a fire station Friday and is thought to be the first infant taken to a Clark County Fire Department station since the state's Safe Haven law took effect in 2001.

Clark County Fire Department spokesman Scott Allison said a man who claimed to be a relative of the mother dropped off the boy about noon Friday at fire station No. 20, 5710 Judson Ave. He said paramedics checked the baby and transported him to University Medical Center, where he was in good health.

“Our paramedics that took care of the child were ecstatic that the parents did the right thing and brought the baby in,” Allison said.

Allison said the Safe Haven Statute allows parents to drop off babies who are younger than 30 days old at any police, fire or hospital location. He said the law keeps the parents’ information confidential and is intended to prevent an unwanted baby from being harmed.

“It’s never fun to report that a baby was thrown into the garbage with yesterday’s news,” Allison said. “We’re happy it was delivered to the fire station with good intent.”
